History of King Boo
An Article on how the character has changed in each game since Luigi's Mansion
King Boo is the overlord of all ghosts, according to games such as Luigi's Mansion, but how does this character change by game? Why do the developers re design his appearance in every Mario game? Well, this article should reveal all about the newest ultra evil boss character in Mario (I'm counting Bowser, Wart, Tatanga, Wario, Donkey Kong and random other end boss characters in Mario games).
Luigi's Mansion
In Luigi's Mansion, King Boo was first heard of after Luigi pressed a switch which released 51 Boos, including King Boo into the Mansion. Here, he was a regular sized boo, with an ornate gold crown with a single red jewel in the top of it and a purple tongue. He had locked away Mario in a portrait, planning to do the same with Luigi, until he got foiled by Luigi, who took the red gem from his crown and turned him into a portrait.
Super Mario Sunshine
When Mario later went to Isle Defino on vacation, and was sidetracked into trying to stop Shadow Mario who had stolen the shine sprites, he went to Sirena Beach. A few days later there, the manager reported that the casino had been closed because of creepy sounds coming from the basement, with the plumber being sent to investigate as usual. After finding a secret roulette wheel under the basement floor, Mario was forced to confront King Boo, somehow back from being locked up, who had grown huge! He had turned into a strange white Boo, gigantic in size with a larg ered tongue hanging from his mouth, the crown replaced by an older one which looked very bland. He foiled King Boo again, after feeding him a pepper which set his mouth on fire then throwing fruit at him.
Mario Kart Double Dash/Future Sports games/future adventure games
He reappeared here along with Petey Piranha in an attempt to stop Mario and Luigi from winning the race, taking part as one of the drivers in an odd kart. But he had changed yet again, being smaller with the same crown and still a large tongue.
Why he changes appearance:
I don't think the appearance change is because of developer amnesia, or the like, but comes with the game. When a major new Mario game is released, it always has a revolutionary new concept, often with a different graphic style to boot. And as you can see, all enemies and bosses from different Mario games, from Koopas to Bowser in an extent, change appearance with the graphic style. And size is generally this:
When a character is made an adventure mode boss, their size is often amplified to look overly evil, and ominous. However, in a sport game, all characters are generally shrunk down to fit in the same size karts, use same equipment, etc. This may explain why character size changes a lot. And for some reason, Bowser always shrinks just a bit from Adventure game size in RPGs...
So there you have it, a short but neat article about King Boo. Next though, how does this effect the Mysteries of the Mansion Big Boo's Haunt history story...
