The Challenge Mode glitch
Super Mario 64 DS always had some glitches that involved falling through walls in the form of soft corners, hells portal/heaven's portal glitches and long jump glitches involving mirrors and other neat tricks. Mario Kart DS also had these in Banshee Boardwalk with ghost supports, and non-existant fences in Luigi's Mansion. Now, someone has discovered a trick which allows this ultimate trick to be completed in the latest hit game... New Super Mario Bros. Read on now for how this trick is the breakthrough of the 21st Century!
What's the trick?
There is a secret mode called Challenge mode which causes the screen to scroll with Mario, stopping backward movement. This trick, if done with a small gap, can force Mario to the ceiling, go through any object in his way. Or if the ceiling is too tough, he will phase through the walls around him like with the Minus World in the original game. This can have many potentially dangerous side effects for poor Mario.
God Mode
God mode, the common term for full invunerability to danger in a videogame can be done in certain castles levels, mainly in worlds 1 or 2. For world 1, Mario has to leave a minute gap between the edge of the screen and the first moving spiked wall near the Dry Bones in Castle 1. If he jumps up then, he will rise to the top and be able to walk right over the top of the closing in passageway, safe from harm! See picture 1
Getting Stuck
Now, with all these types of glitches, there is a chance to get stuck. And this is partially in a few distinct areas:
- Above the boss door area's ceiling
- In a small alcove with no room to ground pound which is surrounded by bricks, normally with a star coin inside
- Above a ceiling with no gap leading down to the rest of that part of the caslte
Some good examples are in the second castle, in the first room. By using a glitch to go above the ceiling to the right of the area, Mario can get stuck above the door to the next area and cannot get back. He must exit to the map screen
Other examples are in alcoves, like this one:
In conclusion to my brief research, this glitch is a great tool. In the right hands, it allows you to skip huge chunks of a level, but in the wrong hands, it is lethal. And costly too if you cannot go back to map (what if you skipped that level?)
