fine, ill explain it.
boss battles require backgrounds, making bosses require graphics tools, and ROM editing,
and you'll need to make a texture map of the level

Layout and graphics are the same, plus Gimp is mainly for sig pics, same as Photoshop, but both are good,
Texture, Layout, and graphics are the same

You DO NOT need a background, at least for the designs for the levels. That's because it's a whole lot easier to use and move sprites around on a white background than with a really fancy background. Sure, the hack itself will have the background, but using it for maps is just awkward.
