Now, thanks to a new modification, all bots and logged out users online are shown on the forum home page. Now, below is a guide to what I mean by this.

Bots

What is a bot?

A bot is an automated program which downloads files online for various purposes or interacts with online files, the second thing being like a macro. This can be for good or bad purposes, good being for search engine indexing, site HTML/CSS validating, checking on ads for guideline violations and archiving content for the internet archive. It can also be for evil purposes such as copying content or trying to spam the forum.

Common Bots

Google- This bot indexes pages for inclusion in the Google search engine, which every must know about by now.

Yahoo Slurp- Same etc for Yahoo.

MSNBot- Indexes pages to be included in MSN search engine.

W3C- Checks code for validation against W3C standards for HTML and CSS, and automatically visits when the page is validated at either http://validator.w3.org or http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/

Why are they displayed on the home page?

I added a modification because now members can know which users are human and which are not.

Should you block bots (Lead Mods and up)?

Not if they are search engine spiders, or for other non spam uses. Yes if they are spam bots which post a ton of links to probably illegal sites.
