View Full Version : Is Disconnecting immoral?

The most annoying thing many people encounter while playing Mario kart DS is disconnecting. Put simply, it is the cowardly act of quitting when you are about to lose in a race against a human opponent to 'preserve' your precious win record.

Why do I think it is immoral? Well one thing relates to the philosophy of Virtue Ethics and the Golden Mean, where you should aim to use the right amount of a virtue. For example, the virtue of Courage works like this:

Deficency of it: Cowardice
Right amount: Courage
Excess: Rashness

Yes, that's right. Cowardice, such as quitting for your personal benefit is a deficency of courage, and as a greek philosopher would have said, this is immoral as you are not having enough courage.

Another reason is the wifi terms and conditions. For one, the Nintendo Wifi Terms state clearly that you may not use the service to take part in any activity that disrupts or diminishes the quality of the services for others. And I am sure that quitting disrupts the service for others.

What do you think about this?

Nintendo should take a stand, I think. And, a Greek person would probably kill them back in those days if they ran out of war as a coward, or do something bad to them... Yeah, those days were rough. I'd be pretty annoyed if someone disconnected on me, so I vote "yes" it is immoral!

Same here. It is also seen as immoral by the theory of Virtue Ethics, dating back to Ancient Greece.

Interesting how nearly everything dates back to Ancient Greece. just goes to show how big Greece was back then...

Yeah, that was the place when many philosophical theories started.

So very true. I learnt that at school!

Yeah. And according to some moral theories, disconnecting is wrong!

People will always leave the match and disconnect, which happens at random times.

I know. That gets pretty annoying. I even wrote an article on this:

Yeah, that is very similar to disconnecting!

alright then I would prolly be annoyed by disconnecting to.

True, as most people are!

They really ruin the fun. One time someone disconnect because I won the first race. That article was true. Accept your lost.

I agree. Just because these people are cowards who are jealous of the real skill of others does not mean they should not be sporting and finish the race, letting the winner have their well deserved win.

The people who get the idiots who disconnect are probably the people that accept the fact they can beaten. Those people just don't want any losses in their records, so they look un-defeatable.

They will leave because they don`t want to feel bad, seeing the better player, earning his win at the end.

I think that personally it is nicer, and more fair to just accept you are not the best and take the loss/losses like a man.

That's very true, but how will Nintendo fix this for future/Wii instalments? Personally, I think there should be a 3-strikes and you're out kind of system, where after 3 disconnects in a certain timeframe causes a suspension of online connectivity for a set period.

That way, 'innocent' disconnectors (router problems, battery running out, urgent need to stop playing etc.) would be OK.

I think this would be a good idea as well. I also think they could help it by showing the connection rate before a match, like in Metroid Prime Hunters. That way, those disconnectors and loss deleters would soon be found out and avoided by most people and their records would mean nothing.

Very true, they would get avoided.

Yeah, you got to take your losses like a man, turn around and learn to get better.

True, and it is not moral either, as this article will show:

I admit, I used to disconnect when I was losing to snakers back then, but now I don't disconnect anymore EXCEPT if I see someone use offensive emblems like someone using the Nazi symbol or a drawing of a guy's privates.

I had soooo many people disconnect on me because either I was winning or because of my 300 plus wins. I would have more wins if these people didn't leave me!

I hate disconnecting to, and I like how you learnt it was wrong and stopped. As for those with offensive emblems, don't they know it is actually against the wifi terms and conditions?

Still, I remember it said that you were not allowed to use the service to transmit objectionable content, and I guess offensive emblems comes under that.

I stopped disconnecting not just because it was plain wrong, but I learned from a fellow snaker that I can still get some wins in during a 3-4 player race, even if i don't come in 1st.

Yeah, by beating those who are not 'snaking', or those who idiotically don't try to actually win, or those who fall off the track, you get the picture. Always better to have some wins and some losses than no wins and no losses.
