Huh, I can't believe I keep forgetting rules. Jeeze...
Alright, just to let you know, in spriting, using JPEG as a format is a no-no. GIF and PNG is encouraged since it is a lossless format. Right now what you have here cannot be considered sprites because the images are distorted.

Actually, GIFs aren't as greatly useful as PNGs other than for animations, because GIFs have a very restricted colour scheme.

That's where you're wrong. Sprites are MEANT to have restricted colours, the highest bittage for sprites I've heard of (not to be mistaken with the true max, which hasn't been confirmed) is 32-bit, and there's a restriction of 15 colours + transparency. So using GIFs for sprites are more than reasonably within the reаlm of possibility.
Also, people reading this. Don't be deceived, the word reаlm is still blocked. I'm just REALLY good at word bypassing.

Does depend on the game in question's art style you're using or trying to imitate/rip from. I know quite a few games with incredibly detailed sprite based graphics which wouldn't quite work as a GIF image. Possibly Wario Land 4 if you tried to rip a sprite sheet, since there's quite a range of colours and shades used (it's also a plain annoying game for this because of like, seven layer backgrounds and foregrounds). Yoshi's Island DS maybe? Oh, and pre rendered games are a complete bad idea with gif formats, although I'm not sure if they count as sprites (Does Donkey Kong Country count as a sprite based game, or is it a different kind of art style?) Gif based Bramble Blast is probably a near impossibility...
There's also the fact that the GIF format itself is trying to be phased out by certain groups due to how at one point, there was a patent held on the format by an organisation and what not. Take of that as you will, and sorry for getting off topic.

Detail? Oh, you mean like this?

Guess how many colours that has? :P
Games use sprites in layers, this is why people who rip the game, rip the sprites of the same category on the same sheet. The colour is limited and serves as a clean delivery method. Believe me Cheat, I got you beat. I have ripped and created tons of sprites and models, from varying types of games.
Now, I'm not saying games themselves have limited palettes, that's a misconception. No, what I'm talking about is CHARACTER and OBJECT sprites. Backgrounds rarely have a short limit to colours, and can use up to 256 colours if need be. (though honestly, no one background needs that ridiculous amount)

Oops, sorry, I'll just practice re-coloring (since spriting is just plain hard).
I think I'll just make avatars, so can I delete thi thread, and make a new avatar shop?

I won't delete the topic, but I will close it for you if you want, so you can make another topic.
