View Full Version : Cell Phones in School?

So anyway, I was reading my school newspaper, and there was an article adhering to the issue stated in the thread title. I'll go ahead and post the article here... And I am not taking credit for writing this, but I am certainly not going to post the name of the author here, though.
Luv 4 the Phones
"A lot of adults don't understand why kids are so attached to their phone, but phones become a part of us. Do you know anyone that wears a watch anymore or carries an adress book? No, not many people use these because they have them on their phones! We have calculators, calendars, notes, clocks, games, camera, video, music, alarms, etc. Of course we also use them for talking and texting. Our lives don't revolve around school, but texting does help us communicate with friends that may live far away. If adults just relaxed and gave us reasonable restrictions for cell phones, we could start using them in our daily lives, like in school. Also, when we have all of our personal information on our phones, we worry about what teachers do when they take them up. It's like if someone went into your room and started tearing everything apart and going through your personal business! We don't know what they're doing with our phones, and we really care. We would like just a little freedom, like maybe letting us text during lunch. A lot of kids would appreciate it. I mean, we don't just use our phones to see if Bob is going out with Suzy or if they broke up! We use them to communicate, ask each other about school or organize our schedules. However, we interviewed Mrs. Everson and it doesn't look likely 'It is not in the district code of conduct to use them in any part of the instructional day,' said Mrs. Everson. If they would just give us a chance, it could work our, as long as students don't abuse this freedom. It could be a while until these have a chance of happening, but we hope that it might one day."
-(Author's name)
In the nutshell, this is just a typical persuasive paper, which I'm sure most of us have done before. You can tell this was written by one of those "rebels" who wanted more freedom than they already have. (which, in my opinon, is enough) However, I oppose this idea. The author does provide legitimate (more or less) reasons of why cell phones should be integrated into the instructional day, "I mean, we don't just use our phones to see if Bob is going out with Suzy..." but as Mrs. Everson states, "It is not in the district code of conduct..." this whole argument seems to be reduced to nothing. What the district says, goes, no matter what anyone at the induvidual school thinks. And conversely to what the author says here, "... it could work out, as long as students don't abuse this freedom." I think that students would surely abuse this, because middle school students, no offense, cannot handle these privleges. I rest my case.
I am open for intellectual discussion and opinons. Just don't get to argumentative. Oh, and my friend wears a watch to school every day. <_<

At my school they take cell phones away. I never bring mine though mainly because people at my school are stupid enough to text in school.

Yes, these are the rules they have at my school. You can have them, just have them OFF, not silent or any crap like that. Believe it or not, I never wanted a phone. My parents made me get one because they wanted to keep in contact with me. Even so, I don't act like I have one.

I completely agree with whoever wrote that. The teachers took away my friend's phone because he forgot to turn it off and the stupid phone company texted him. Then they went through his text messages and gave 3 people detention just because they had sent him text messages saying "hi" the period before they took it away. Teachers seem to think students only text to cheat when nobody here ever really does.

I say they should be allowed during passing periods and recess/lunch, but not in class unless your teacher says you can. This applies to other personal electronics devices, like iPods.

Well, in opposition, the phone shouldn't have been in his pocket. However, giving 3 people detention for texting your friend "hi" is a little too much.

I don't think they need to have cell phones during the instructional day. They aren't needed and provide only a distraction. There's enough cell phone abuse already without rules allowing the use of them.
I do think that the rules may be a little too much, during free period like lunch. But the students wouldn't be able to NOT abuse the priveledge, and would bring the texting into class (more so than they do now.)
I know not everyone here is of the same nationality. But in America, our academics aren't too sharp. I want to see an intelligence increase in my nation, not a decrease. And cell phones aren't going to help kids learn any more efficiently during school hours.

People at my school ALWAYS have a phone out even though there's a policy against it. I'm glad I don't own a phone for a few reasons. One, I don't want to be like anyone at school. I want to be myself and not let anyone rub off me. Personally, there's no one at school to emulate, except the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Two, I, or at least my mom, says that I'm too young to handle the responsibility of one. Three, I currently don't possess the money to pay the regular phone bill. Finally, having a cell phone before your 18 nowadays is personally overrated. :p

Honesty cell phones shouldn't be a bad thing at school unless someone is abusing the rule by using it during class then sure it's a bad thing, but if it's in some one's pocket, it should not get taken away.
Too bad my teachers are all way to strict.

Well, sure. If it's not in use, it isn't a distraction. I always have my cell phone in my pocket. But it's turned off from the time I enter the building to the time I leave.

Wow... Couldn't have but it better myself. You pretty much just read my mind there with that post. And yes, cell phones would just provide a distraction. And you are certainly right about America's academics (I should know- I live down south, where the "not so bright" kids go. I don't belong here.)

Well said, well said. There's too much abusing of cell phones at school, anyway, and I will probably never see the day where I don't see one kid with their phone out, using it sureppitiously.
And get this- one of my former student teachers was soo leniant, she let us text in class, yet said that we should tell everyone we did not. She was lucky she did not get reported for district rule violation, but that's just a little too far. Being liberal is one thing, violating rules in a "liberal" fashion is not acceptable. Thanks for moving this topic... Zexis, I assume? But if it was you, Kyle, then thanks to you... Won't make that same mistake...

But yes, people do love to abuse the fact they can hide cell phones in pockets, so they can sneak them out when there's no supervision. Now you know why kids want so much freedom...

I dont think cell phones should be allowed in school, but things like forgetting to put your phone in your locker (like I NEVER do) even if its turned off or if you never use it, should go unpunished. To me there's a sense of security of having something to use if something bad happens.

Yeah... Kids already have enough distractions, with their friends and materialistic lifestyle, and I think that if even the author of this article were told why this just would't compute, I'm sure the person would see our side of the argument as most logical. If that fails, we brainwash them with school assembely videos and propa- I mean "good decisions" like that. >_>

People try that, but they have locker raids for drugs and stuff. Luckily they can't take it when it's in your locker turned of, but if it's in you locker and it's on then they can take it. I hate that rule. I never bring my phone to school anyway, but it's still a bogus rule. :(

There really isn't any use for a cell phone during the school day. I carried mine on me my Junior and Senior year and it served as nothing but a distraction. I would let students bring it though, since a lot of kids stay after school for extra-curricular activities, and they would need to be able to contact their ride home if the activity is canceled or let out early.

Well, you see, the thing with that is, how can you prove you "forgot" to put your cell phone in your locker? I mean, there is no difference between bringing it blatantly and forgetting to leave it in your locker...

And you see, my school is trying to prevent kids from using cell phones after extra-curiccular activites and tutoring, because you need a permission slip to stay. So you can say, they are trying to make us not use our phone at all in school- even if you needed to, they would make us use the school phone, which is fine by me.

Well, I think that not being allowed to use your phone in school is a little too much. What if there is any emergency?
My parents wouldn't think to call the school first; in fact, they'd be shocked if I couldn't answer my cell phone.
However, I do agree that kids text WAY too much. Every class I go to, at least one kid at some point or other during the period pulls out their cell phone secretly to check on a text.
My school has taken one measure at least: Any time you go to the bathroom, you MUST leave your cell phone behind; the teacher takes possesion of it until they get back. But, personally, that's only a small start...

Glad to have your opinion, Yoshi987. I do agree with you on the part of if an emergency happens, I would certainly go rushing to my phone to call authorities. But how do teachers know the student has a phone in their pocket when they go to the restroom? Do they feel them down or something? Just kidding, but I think this may be a way to see if the student has a phone on them and keep a weary eye on them when they get back... Elaborate on this any more, if you can.

Its like a food web...
too be honest, if the teacher sees the txt messages... everyones got detention. Not to be mean but *****es (Popular chicks who think they get what the #### they want) are the texters, they know we text in class, they find this by their grades... yes... i do text during school, well or youtube for that matter! every Friday in gym i go onto youtube via iphone or just let my friends play games. Friday in gym is the best way to use cell phones cause our teacher is always using the computer. Everyone think there cool cause they have a different cell phone than someone else's. That just make em lose reputation. Whats better? a nokia or an iphone? Touch or pads? texting too much makes imprints in your skin; heres something too! we all have ipods, well at least some kinda music player right? well with the iphone you can MMS, text, go on the INTERNET via cellular Internet, so, i downloaded an app during school, didn't take too long, is that good instead of wielding an ipod touch AND a cell phone??? Everyone thinks there so damn cool because they text. Well?? notice something here. Technology, computers and stuff like that. This is the only thing that makes people cool. No technology at school means no such thing as cool. Your not damn popular, your technology is! everyone doesn't believe me!! why do you think everyones treated equally in Africa?? cause, theres barely any technology and other important things to matter about. I don't care if you own an iphone, or the latest computer model, work for Microsoft. Technology is ruling the world people! Whatcha gonna do about it? continue it?? soon we may all be fat cause we have no reason to work cause those robots do the work for use. And then the whole human race is wiped out. Technology is good and bad, but to a certain point its useful, to some people they think robots are going to do their job, go bankrupt and/or worse. Stop going beyond beleives. Our technology is good enough already! So, heres another saying.
Technology = Mans enemy :
this'll soon be true, or it maybe now for some people.
I'm not saying to prevent it, but whats polluting the world right now?? Yes technology! Sadly too! We know its great for educational purposes, but why keep it on 24/7?? Polar bears are almost near extinction!! Charging, using, anything to do with technology makes everything worse like how some detonate bombs. YEP! A school near me a bomb was planted, well 2 in the football feild, someone texted and BOOM!! they all ran to the foot ball feild cause they were forced to. You know what happens to the 2nd... boom, no one killed, barely any bad inguiries... See technology is good and bad...
Technology is made for limiting yourself

If by elaborate you mean clarify, this is what I mean:
Say Bob Jones is in Mr. John's class. Bob wants to go to the bathroom. Bob goes up, gives Mr. John his cell phone, takes the bathrom pass, and then goes to the bathroom. Once Bob returns, Bob puts the bathroom pass back in place, takes his cell phone from Mr. John's desk, puts it in his backpack, then sits down.
Does that make a little more sense?

Makes sense to me.
Anyways, I have a recent story that happened in math class. A cell phone went off somewhere near me, and it clearly wasn't a call. It rang just once, like a reminder or text message. The first suspect, who sat in front of me, DID have his cell phone on. He showed his latest call history, but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't a call, so he got off easily there. Next up was me, easy, pulled my broken phone out of my pocket, it was off. Nobody else had any cell phone nearby either, so the culprit went off easy. I think the guy in front of me's cell phone made the noise, he just didn't get caught because it wasn't a call.
Anything like that happen to anyone here?

Nintendofanthr... You certainly have some great opinions about technology, huh? So it seems like you estimate that the "popular" kids at your school are the ones with the best technology, not the ones with the best personality? (Keep dreaming...) Well, I think you are partly right. However, there are other stigmatizing things that makes a person popular, like, well, I wouldn't want to state it here. But I do see your point on technology being man's enemy soon, because we use technology to make and activate nueclear weapons. But I am not sure how far these things will go...

There allowed at my school, but not DSis! I see people always texting and the like, always. I mean, I don't even have a cell phone ( but I did have a Tracphone hat had no minutes and got lost...).
Stupid girl lost her purse with all her money in it and only worried bout her cell phne and not her DS/DS Lite. People really need to be educated that game systems are better than the "c-phone",
And why bring a cell phone? It can get stolen. Why bring a DSi? Well...I don't know. I am the only one in my school with a DSi (my friend has a black one, only exception).

For those of you complaining about how teachers use cell phones and students can't, simple statement, they are done with school. You aren't.
But yes, I do however agree that they are taking the whole cell phone issue a bit too harshly. They think students could take pictures of answers, or text their friends for the answers? What makes the faculty so sure that those friends HAVE THE SAME TEACHER?! Different teachers have different ways of formatting tests. And even if they do have the same teacher, but at different times, who's to say the one who is texting his/her friend the answers are even right? And the picture part, well that's complete BS. Students would be hard-pressed to be able to even find the answer sheet to a test.

Sometimes they have business reasons for whipping those things out. Doesn't matter though, you can't do anything about it.
And if they do just to make students mad, well I just laugh at that (mainly because I don't bring my cell to school, nor do I text on it ;)).

I only read through the first page. From what I gathered, cell phones would be helpful in school. Due to all the accessories (ex. notepad, calculator) on there the cell phone serves helpful purposes. One very notable benefit is that the owner of a cell phone can always use it for emergencies. This is all I use my cell phone for, and I otherwise have it off.
So, I hope schools allow the use of them inside and outside the classroom for all positive reasons listed. The code of integrity will enforce appropriate cell phone use.
