How do you save the game?

To save the game you must either beat a tower, complete a castle level or spend star coins. Once you beat the game, you can save any time by pressing start and then save.

What do red coins do?

Collecting all of them make an item appear on the screen, which is either a mushroom, fire flower or 1up mushroom.

How do you play as Luigi?

Hold L and R while selecting a file.

How do you unlock cannons?

Find the secret exit in the nearest level to open up the path to the cannons.

How do I beat [boss name]?

Check the boss guide

How do I beat [level number/name]?

See the full walkthrough on the main site.

What's challenge mode? How do you unlock it?

Challenge mode is a special mode that stops backtracking in the levels. Some levels though do not have the mode activated, and you cannot use this mode in boss battles.

To unlock this, beat the game, pause in the world map and press

L, R, L, R, X, X, Y, Y

There's a mini pipe! How do I go down there?

You have to access all small pipes as mini Mario to enter. These rooms normally hold a star coin and some kind of puzzle.

How do I smash these blocks with a celing over them?

Build up speed and dash at them with shell Mario.

What's the weird snail thing?

It's called a snailicorn.

How do I use another item when the shell is equipped?

Sadly, because of it's high dominance status, you cannot override the shell with anything but a mini or mega mushroom.

How do I know if a level has a secret exit?

If there is what seems to be a clear path to another spot on the map which isn't the normal one, or there's a nearby cannon/pipe, assume there's a secret exit.

How do I play levels behind gates?

To access these levels, pay the gate five coins to go through. You can also save.

How do I kill the large eel?

While you can't kill it, you can go through it in level 8-3 with a star and let it pass, making the level much easier!

How do I play more mini-games?

You can only play most of them in multiplayer mode.

What's the difference between Mario and Luigi?

Apart from them being different characters, neither has any variation in any ability like jumping height or speed.

Where's the secret ace coin in 1-1?

Go down one of the pipes in the level and get it from the secret room.

How do I get to worlds 4 and 7?

To get to world 4, beat the world 2 boss, Mummi-pokey as Mini Mario, and to get to world 7, beat the world 5 boss, Petey Piranha as Mini Mario. You will then fall in the small passage after exiting the arena with the key and go to the world you need.

How do I unlock the secret wallpaper?

Just get all star coins and spend all of them getting wallpaper and opening gates until you reach the last 20 coins. You can then buy it where you bought the other wallpaper.

How do I get stars by my file?

1- Defeat Bowser in the second castle of world 8.
2- Complete all levels
3- Do the above, get all star coins, find and use all secret exits and use all cannons.

True about your sticky posts, and yes, games with less content get less guide help, hence the 2D Mario game guides are pretty short.

i know.
it would be pretty bad to see a buyable NSMB guide and seeing a bunch of pathetic people buying it./ tho i will say prima's pokemon d/p guide is fantastic even without the pokedex [releases seperate may 14 US] because it has EVERYTHING [besides the pokedex = releases seperate may 14 US]

That's a bit lame, releasing two guides for pretty much one game. The Official Nintendo Magazine in the UK did too though for Gold and Silver, releasing one strategy guide and one Pokemon guide (yes, they actually sold guides in shops, which is like Nintendo Power selling guides without magazines).

you really should sticky this, though it is nice and simple, it's still a good game guide for basic players and players who have a troubling question about the game.
