View Full Version : I've noticed something about the battery power

That it also varies depending on the cpu/gpu useage. Or in other words, graphical intenseity.
For example, in NSMB(while on borderline red/green power) going on one of the water levels, that BigFudgeingEel comes, your power turns to red, then when it goes off the screen, it goes back to green!
I've never seen this mentioned anywhere before, and I'm betting loads of people will rip this info off for their own...

I am going to test this seriously, because if that is true, it would explain a lot about how the DS works. I will credit you though. Oh, and it also depends on screen brightness and the like.

Haven't noticed it. I have also noticed that the large eel returns if you wait around too long if going back past it with a star.

You need to be on BORDERLINE red/green, and there's no way of knowing this, but if you keep playing when your DS hasn't been charged for awhile, you'll notice, I use my DS as an alarm clock most of the time, so I'm usally on low power.
Oh and I knew about brightness levels and such.

Yeah, brightness settings can really help or hinder battery life...

I found when on the border line of red and green, and while playing Metroid Prime Hunters, when I touch the screen, it goes red, and when I stop touching the screen, if returns to green!

So whenever you need to turn around, the light goes red?

what are you talking about

About how the battery power is effected by game performance.
Dr.Aaron
14th July 2007, 10:29 PM
Yeah so if something big is on screen, the DS needs moar power to run it, when it goes off the screen it dosen't need as much power because it isn't rendering as much.
Touchscreen usage also seems to affect battery usage(NintenDan), which makes sense as it really as you know...

Thanks for that potentially useful information.

Also, if it's red, and you leave it in sleep mode for around 10 minutes, which I did, and when I returned, to my surprise, it was green for 1 minute, then turned red...

16th July 2007, 11:36 AM
That's pretty cool. I should try that, maybe it extends battery life?
Dr.Aaron
17th July 2007, 09:57 PM
Well, batteries recover a little bit when turned off... I noticed this back in the advance days, so sleep mode probably has a similar effect to a certain degree......................

GAH! double post

17th July 2007, 10:07 PM
Don't worry about the double post. And batteries recover slightly when the console is turned off? I never knew that...
Dr.Aaron
18th July 2007, 11:39 PM
Yep, I always used to turn my GBA off when it got to red, then when I turned it back on it was green again.

19th July 2007, 12:47 AM
That must be quite a useful trick I suppose...

Only for 5 minutes. :D

I knew that trick. when my Gameboy SP is red, you press the light button and press again, it turns green. In Final Fantasy 3 for DS, when the characters attack the enemies, the battery turns red. Also saving the game will make it turn red too. That happensin Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.
Dr.Aaron
20th July 2007, 10:09 PM
That's probably because it's using extra power to write the save data to the cartridge...

Nice theory there. Seems plausible to me.

GBA games are obviously gonna take less battery power because the use of only one screen and it's less graphics intensive than ds games.
cheat-master30
24th July 2007, 12:25 AM
True that. If it could play even older games, I guess they would use even less power, correct?
Dr.Aaron
24th July 2007, 12:42 AM
Aye sir. I bet putting a nes/gameboy game in sleep mode would last the whole year. :)

LOL! Pity they cannot be put in sleep mode.

There's probably a way, downloadable software perhaps?
Phew the battery discussion has been on awhile, I'm a battery veteran now... >_>
Ds playing a game like this: http://www.crysis-online.com/Media/Screenshots/Screenshots/Village-01.jpg
Wouldn't even have a battery life because it would just crash, then start melting. ;)

A DS playing even some Gamecube or Xbox games would probably die before it even started...

25th July 2007, 10:43 AM
But, you could put the charger on and play! UNLIMITED POWER SOURCE! TO THE XTREME!

You want to blow the DS to pieces or what?
Dr.Aaron
26th July 2007, 12:11 PM
Extreme overclocking.... Time to install fans and water cooling!

XD the fans idea would suck if you were a hard gamer and jabbed one of you're fingers in whilst playing a game

I don't like playing the DS while it's charging.

31st July 2007, 06:45 PM
Why not? Never runs out of power that way...
Dr.Aaron
31st July 2007, 07:42 PM
Yeah, there's quite a few advantages playing on charge, like you can turn the screen to full brightness without worryinhg about teh power, and stuff. The only disadvantage is that you can't move around as much. But I usally only sit around anyway.
