View Full Version : How Useful do you think School is?

For me, as someone getting increasingly sick of the arrogant self proclaimed people that seem to think it's only purpose is to make people obediant, I think it does have a lot of uses that gives it a purpose. For example, you're encouraged to do things such as teamwork, which quite bluntly, is asked for at a lot of jobs but a lot of people probably wouldn't care for otherwise. I do also think it's pretty good at giving you various subjects that you might be interested in some time in the future. Seriously, I probably would have never gave the subject I'm currently doing in higher education a thought if I'd never had the option to choose it, and many of my interests when I was in school were at least somewhat inspired by subjects I had to take while in school. These were then subjects I enjoyed and ended up having more interest in.
Personal experience note: Literally every single thing I had interests in have generally have been found out through education, or looking around on the internet.
Secondly, from my experience, you do meet many of your friends and peers at school, college, university, etc. Anyone who thinks you'll meet everyone as such in your local neighbourhood without going to school to me is seeming extremely deluded.
The final point in my opinion; you're not going to get a great job without some form of education. Period. Sure, maybe you'll end up working for some small shop or a fast food restaurant with no decent exam results/degrees, but it's pretty damn unlikely you'll get a job that pays even remotely well. Even less so in a recession. Like it or not, the employers do go on your results in education, among other factors. Maybe you could do well starting your own business and having an original idea. But for that, don't really bank on it.
Your thoughts about the usefulness of school and education in general.

Education is my top priority. In New York just getting into highschool is as stressful as getting into college.
Also you learn a lot from school. You learn how to count and how to read. Sure people say that homeschooling is okay. I disagree 100%. I think that parents should be parents. Also I do agree that it can be long and boring. But, school is important.

Extremely. When you grow up and want to have money and a family, you have to get up there with a coulple of things. Knowledge, friends, and common sence. School helps alot with all of these things. So sorry kids, but to have a good future and life, you have to go to school.

The people here have already mentioned great reasons why school is useful, and I shall elaborate on them.
Education is a foundation that most of what you do successfully in life depends on. Without a proper education, you would be illiterate, you could not do basic math, and you would not know how most of the world works (i.e. physics, ecological biology, etc.). Government and politics and history classes are very beneficial as they inform you about the development of the world and how countries are maintained by leadership/global interaction. I could go on about how educational institutions are a major help in the growth of us humans.
Sure people say that homeschooling is okay. I disagree 100%. I think that parents should be parents.
That's a good point Orga. While your parents can teach you basic fundamentals of reading, writing, math, and their own career path, they're highly unlikely to teach you anything else. This is why schooling is important, you learn about many other things in life that aid you such as computers and health awareness. In the colonial era home schooling may have been sufficient to get by in life, but by the standards of today you won't get far in this high-tech society without an institutional level of education.
To expand on what Mr.L mentioned, school is a great source of knowledge, career future and life development. School orients you to the world of work and a level of professionalism. Even if you are not going to be a rocket scientist later on in life, surely you will develop transitional skills such as workforce etiquette, how to write a resume, and how to go to a job interview. Also, without satisfactory education the most you can do with your work choices will likely involve some minimal wage job like at a small store or some kind of fast food place. With a powerful education on the other hand, you can do something magnificent with your life such as being a medical doctor or a computer programmer. It is in these high level jobs that you will be paid a great salary, capable of maintaining a successful household and even having plenty of your own spare money.

I'd say that school is pretty darn important for those actually care about their future. Others, well, they just don't give a damn, and the school system shouldn't care about them either (silly Bush and the whole "No Child Left Behind" bit...)
But school isn't without it's flaws. I feel like we go awfully deep into topics that will have no use to us in the real world. Never mind "broadening our horizons;" there is a limit to how far you should go when simply giving your students a taste of something.
And then there's test scores; they reflect (wrongfully so) on a school's performance, which means that too many teachers care about getting dem test scores up; screw the children, we just want a raise! Rather frustrating. Some of the teachers genuinely do care, but many don't act like they do. As a result, we're learning how to pass tests; tests that don't do squat out of school. We need to be taught skills, and less knowledge. Without the skills to apply knowledge, knowledge is useless. Unless you're on a game show, that is.
Pardon my rambling. :P

School is good. It's just overdone at some points. And having to get up too early? That's not good either. Especially during the middle school and high school years, when kids have a hard time getting up and need more sleep. Move school up to starting at 9 and ending at 4:15, dangit.

Screw school. Do you want mean people yelling numbers at you? NO, you don't.
Once you get past 3rd Grade there is no need for school. The reason the system hasn't failed is because it's a dang complex system.
All these snobs want people learning so they can get extra cash. My 4-H son of [censored] teacher hates me, just because I didn
t have a good project. She informed me the day before. I couldn't get in a project, but want to know wwhat made her mad?
She hated me, she was going to fail me, but since I have excellent stage skills I got the teacher to clap (over dramatic if you ask me) for it, which...was kinda creepy. But in the end I got a white ribbon (3rd place, so suck it 4-H).
Also it gave me another idea for the talent show.

I disagree Zexis some people dont care about school then after a while it starts to sink in that they need it and end up getting A+'s and they do really well. You want to take that away?

School is preparation for the real world. You will learn the things you need to know for whatever occupation you pursue.
It is also a test, and not one you write at the end of the year, or at the end of a math unit. Your grades do not tell your potential future employers how smart you are, they tell them how devoted and motivated you are.
If you apply for a job at a golf course, there's a large chance they'll call the school to talk about your grades. Why would a golf course give a crap if you were smart or not? Truth be told, they don't. They want to know if you do your job. If you've got a C average, it tells them that you don't work hard enough, it doesn't tell them you're stupid.
Then there's the social aspect; the sole reason I haven't/won't drop out of school. It's next to impossible to make friends if you don't have a job or you don't go to school. If you're at work/school five days a week, you're around people all the time. When you're around people, you tend to make friends (unless you try not to).
Yeah, school's important.

Some could be like that, wasabi, but every day I walk into school, I see countless punks, losers...people that are going nowhere in life. Yes, profiling is bad, politically incorrect, blah blah blah, but often times, profiling does work. Look at the way a person talks, acts, dresses...you can get a good feel for what kind of person they are.
And I don't that hardly any of those failures are going to go, "Wait, maybe I should care about my future...good grades FTW!!!" They just don't give a damn, and are going nowhere once they're out of school.

Yes, school is what will prepare you for the world. I think school is important because it will expose you to what real life will feel like. So yeah, school is useful.
