View Full Version : Opinion on vegetarianism and vegan diets?

For me, I think it's ridiculously how more common they're getting nowadays. It's part of the cycle of life for creatures to be eaten/hunted/killed. There's all this about compassion and other stuff, but think about it... does your pet cat show compassion to the mouse it plays with before eating it? Do fish show it? Do you watch wildlife documentaries showing all animals living in harmony and only eating vegetarian (or vegan) diets? No, it's not 'more natural' to be vegetarian.
Especially as humans are omnivores. See this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humans#Diet
Omnivore = eats both meat and plant based food. Pretty much said as 'devours everything'.
Humans are pretty much evolved to eat both meat and plants (vegetables, fruits, etc). There's nothing wrong with eating either, and the people shouting how meat is cruel, murder, etc seem to fail to realise both human biology and that nature IS cruel. Survival of the fittest and all that element. At least between seperate species. I'm not even going to try to help them if they're archaic enough to actually believe creationism.
So what are your thoughts on all of this? I think a lot of people fail to realise that the 'natural world' is not some pristeen utopia, especially without people, and that eating multiple kinds of foods (vegetables/fruit, meat) is not wrong.

When you eat veggies or fruit, you're eating something that's alive. That stuff isn't dead until it's rotting.
Animals were meant to be eaten, they don't really serve a whole lot of purposes beyond that.

It's just a moral belief that deprevision of life for our gain, when we have hundreds of alternatives, is unnecessary and cruel. It's nothing to do with what's "natural". Besides, as the most intellectually capable race on the planet we should be able to appreciate morals such as these. Certainly more than a domestic cat.
So we evolved with bodies designed for meat and plant based nourishment. We are a lot smarter than the neanderthals that we evolved from and, as I said before, should be able to appreciate morals that are very simple to understand.
I don't see the need for people to force their opinions onto others on such matters. I can respect the views of vegetarians and non-vegetarians; I mean i'm not a vegetarian and I can still see their point of view.

Plants are alive also and it has been proven that they do have feelings. I hate people who tell you what to eat because instead of trying to stop deforestation of forests they ***** about animals that aren't endangered.
We also have canines which means we eat meat.
Finally you may not eat a cow but if you disturb a bear it will eat you. Animals kill animals.

You know what I say?
If you're a vegetarian/vegan, fine. I don't care.
However, if you start standing up for petty things (like, as orga said, *****ing about animals that aren't even CLOSE to endangered), that's what starts bothering me.
Reminds me of this one comment I read on an article about whaling:
...You know what? We should just stop killing anything. INCLUDING plants.
...Ok. Now what the **** are you gonna eat?
So, I just say it's fine to protest killing, just be wary of what you eat.

Your body hates unhealthy food. Fruits and veggies are the most nicest thing you could give your body.

Sure, animals could be treated better, but otherwise, I agree with what everyone else here is saying basically. One thing I'd like to point out... except for the case of maybe some PETA members, vegans and vegetarians aren't hurting anyone. If they don't want to eat meat or dairy, fine, don't eat meat or dairy...

You have a point there, but your body MUST have like meat and protien and iron and otehr stuff from eating meat based products. I jsut don't get it how vegans can go years without eating meat, it come as a surprise to me.

Because meat isn't the only source of protein.

I know but it has a lot of other stuff you need, right? And besides as someone else said we are Omnivores, meaning we basically eat everthing edible. I'm just saying that it comes to a surprise to me that people can go their whole life (basically) without meat.

Well, the reason someone could be vegan could be because:
1. They have a moral opposition to "eating animals"
2. They have this crazy idea that it's the only way to be healthy *cough*skinny******cough* ...It's an actual book by the way. Google it if you don't believe me.
3. They just don't want to be hypocrites, which goes back to number one.
Personally, I think the whole idea is crazy. Must we remind ouselves, humans or OMNIVORES, not herbivores? We are omnivores because we need a good balance of plants and animals to lead a healthy existence, and it is in best interest for our general health to eat both plants and meat.
