View Full Version : Strategy Guides; what's your viewpoint?

I personally hate these things, as they seem to just go right against what true pros would teach you to do in a game. For example, they never talk about glitches or tricks in games, so a strategy guide for Super Mario 64 would never have the tips to finish with 16 stars in it. and they seem to always say the way to supposedly be good which goes against what professional communities teach. For example, the Mario Kart Double Dash Players Page teaches way more useful and interesting strategies to get excellent times than the official guide, and many times the official guides are just dead wrong.
Another problem is that they make up rumours like character relations and histories, many of which cause false facts and confusion on message boards, normally with no backing whatsoever. For example, Prima's Mario Kart guide said Birdo lives in Nimbus Land, Daisy is Peach's cousin, Waluigi struck oil and Lakitu can control weather.
So what do you think?

Peach cousin? Control weather? Who make these stupid rumors? And Waluigi being in Super Mario 64 DS was fake but try to do it though. Strategy guides are useless to me. I go to gamefaqs for help.

Same. Thanks to Gamefaqs though, I actually knew all about Mario 64 Ds before I actually got the game. And I never once thought Waluigi was in Super Mario 64 DS.

That`s the same rumor as Luigi being in Super Mario 64. I don`t get why they make up these lies to confuse people and make them do the impossible.

Because people are never satisfied with what is actually in the game?

If someone finds out about the rumor, they will and try, like I did with Waluigi. But that takes too long. They said you need to a certain amount of coins to get him and if you messed, you have to start over.

The rumours would keep someone playing from when they got the game to when they die if they try and go along with it, as the rumours are often long winded and likely impossible.

It does not help that once, EGM released an April Fools Day joke, which was a rumour in February. Just 3 months off the date or so.
You also have to laugh at some of the rumours, like having to get a bottle of lava or flying on a pink cow.

That's one use I have for guides, and my only use now. For nice official art like images and the like. Maybe some maps.

aye but I like certain guides because they tell you what stuff dose or where to get them.. because there were somethings I just couldn't find in some games.. and they were usefull for that.
but gudes don't talk about glitchs and that because there just suppose to show you how to beat the game the "right" way.
there are glitch guides and all that for some games I saw.

The best person to write glitch games by far would probably be myself, or some of the Gamefaqs Super Mario 64 DS board, or David Wonn.
