View Full Version : The Bosses Suck (criticism)

Before you flame the heck out of me for this, try and count the moves each boss not including Bowser has. Then combined. Notice anything? My criticism.

The problem is that every SINGLE boss is either a one or two trick pony in terms of attacks. They either can do one thing and that's it, or maybe have a secondary move here and there. No boss except Bowser EVER had more than two moves in this game, and it's a major weakness in that they are basically giant versions or counterparts to enemies without anything different.

Big Bob-omb can only throw you. No real physical power in the attacks as it doesn't do damage if he does this, or you walk into him. He basically fights like a very slow Chuckya. Heck, he's EASIER than a Chuckya.

King Whomp can only slam down at Mario. He's basically a ten foot high Whomp with no abilities that any other one of those enemies doesn't have. Very lame.

Big Boo is basically just a Boo. Heck, he's no different other than being about 10 foot high.

Big Bully can only push you a few feet. No physical power whatsoever in terms of attacks. Hence he is a total wimp, even as far as Mario Kart DS using him as the first mission mode boss (a warm up one if you will). He is nothing more than a Bully. Seriously, two Bullies would be more challenging in a battle.

Eyerok is unique. He has two moves and is not based off any enemy ever from a Mario game. This is good. But he's still lacking in any attacks with only two ever shown (push and slam down with fists). He fights like a mix between a Thwomp and a pushing wall.

Wiggler is also lame. He just tries to run into Mario for damage. Heck, he's basically an EASIER Wiggler with three times the health. However weird that may sound.

However, Bowser was a good boss in terms of battles because he was different. He had many attacks, could vary them and had slightly more intelligence than a common house fly. But why am I so negative about this? Because Galaxy owns it in terms of the bosses having generally more attacks and abilities. Sure, Dino Piranha may be another Mario 64 like boss, and Undergrunt Gunner relies on one difficult battle and two easy ones rather than attacks, but at least they provide an interesting challenge. King Kaliente has two attacks. Bugaboom has two or three attacks. Kamella has three attacks, Tarantox has two attacks, Topmaniac has two, Bouldergeist has five unique attacks, Major Burrows has two, Baron Brr has three and Fiery Dino Piranha has two. This makes for a more interesting battle, more so because they aren't based on common enemies in all their attack methods and abilities.

Oh, and the Bowser/Bowser Jr type fights? The bosses there have a good range of attacks.

Anyone bothered to read this?

You make a goos point here, and to be honest, a point that I have ignored on purpose for some time now. Bowser is the only good boss, with a good and unique move set. Bowser is, however, still the same thing all 3 times you fight him: Throw him into the mine, and each time you fight him he has something new that he can do. Basically bosses in this game are giant sized normal enemies. When you are fighting them for the first couple of times you get an instant shock of their size, but usually they are just as easy as their smaller versions, only they take longer to beat.

The main thing that always killed me in boss battles was falling off the platform. I think I used about 3 lives to beat Eyerok. I always ran away from it and fell off the platform until I realized how easy it really was to beat without running back. Sure the bosses were easy, but I enjoyed battling them. You?

Eyerok was the one actually decently designed normal boss. Mario 64 DS added a few bosses that upped the challenge a bit (Goomboss, King Boo and Chief Chilly were quite good bosses), but most were as easy as the small versions.

I agree 100%. My favorite bosses are all 3 Bowsers. They are the only bosses that really got my adrenaline going. The three bosses that unlocked new characters did also, since I knew I'd be playing with a new character after I beat said boss.

If this was released as the Nintendo 64 one and used the control stick back then, it would have got a better rating for sure.

That goes without saying though. I really think IGN complained way too much about the controls for the DS version, they really aren't bad at all. That's why I review games after I beat them fully, instead of while I am playing them.

That's true. All the magazines jump on that small thing like it's the most important thing in the world even though a half decent player can get used to it and maybe even find it as good as the joy stick. But IGN and magazine reviewers aren't decent players...

No, they are not. I'm definitely not gonna say that the D-Pad is better than the analog stick, but after Bob-omb Battlefield and Whomp's Fortress, I wasn't looking at the buttons I was clicking anymore, just doing it naturally, like on the N64 version.

Bob-ombs in this game, none in the original. As for punches, don't remember that...

I don't think Big Bob-omb does punch in this game.

I'm not sure about the wiggler and eyerock because I never found them but most bosses in this game are just taller versions of enemys

Exactly what cheat and I thought. How did you not find to the Wiggler or Eyerok when cheat has a full guide on the main page Mario Sector, and on the forums 'Fan Guides and Reviews' section?

And in Minish Cap, there was another boss that look like him, Mazaal.

Maybe Nintendo has something with hand bosses?

I don't really think that is it. Although it is a neat idea for a boss.

Back to the point though, if you could buy a remake of this game with Mario Galaxy bosses, would you buy the remake? Or just a patch which changed the boring old bosses to the Mario Galaxy ones?

I'd love it if you could change it to something like this:

Dino Piranha- Bob-omb Battlefield
Not sure- Whomp's Fortress (rename the level as well)
Kingfin- either Jolly Roger Bay or Dire Dire Docks
Bouldergeist- Big Boo's Haunt
Topmaniac- Hazy Maze Cave (maybe also Tick Tock Clock?)
King Kaliente- Lethal Lava Land
Keep Eyerok
Baron Brr- Snowman's Land
Tarantox- Wet-Dry World
Major Burrows- Either Tall Tall Mountain or Hazy Maze Cave
Bugaboom- Tiny Huge Island
Kamella- Rainbow Ride

Megaleg- Bowser in the Sky (renamed)
Bowser Jr- Bowser in the Fire Sea (renamed)

And replace final Bowser with the final Bowser battle in Galaxy.

An interesting idea, but I don't think I'd buy a full remake, but yeah, I'd buy a patch.

If there was one with all the gameplay mechanics and ideas of Mario Galaxy, I'd buy a remake though (I mean all the enemies, physics, gravity puzzles, bosses, graphics, music and everything else).

Symerwizkid22

With all those updates, then I'd actually probably buy the remake.

Too true. It would hardly be Mario 64 any more. I'd love to run all around underneath Bob-omb Battlefield though.

Symerwizkid22
16th December 2007, 12:49 AM
Yeah, the whole gravity thing simply wouldn't work in this game.
