Just to let you know, this is a quick review. I'll be writing a much more detailed review later on, but for now, there's this, so enjoy:
Mario Party DS
Console: Nintendo DS
Nintendo and Hudson
Rated: PG (Mild Gambling References) Australian Rating
Story:
Mario is staring at the sky one night, don't ask me why, when he sees five brilliant beams of light shoot down the sky. One beam falls near Mario. The next day Mario shows everyone the beam that fell from the sky. It was a piece of a Sky Crystal. Suddenly, Kamek flies over the group and Mario finds an invitation the Kamek threw down to them. Bowser is inviting them to a part to say sorry! DK and Diddy also get their hands on the invitation, and DK rushes off for the grub, leaving Diddy to catch up slowly behind.
Mario and co. reach Bowser's castle, just to find themselves walking in another of Bowser's traps. A cage drops, and Bowser laughs! He shows them his new gadget, the Minimizer, and shrinks them all down to the size of chess pieces. Kamek then uses his magic and sends them flying away.
Mario and co. come to, finding themselves in a giant world. There is no doubt, they have to get back to Bowser's castle in order to return to normal. But everyone wants to be the hero. Suddenly, competition is brewing, and all the gang sets out to get to Bowser first. Your job is to help your favourite acomplish that goal.
Controls:
The controls for this game are great. Tapping the dice block is as easy as pie, navigating is a breeze, and the mini-games make good use of the stylus, microphone, and the buttons. They somehow managed to shove in a few tap the button minigames, but these games are slightly easier, and you won't find yourself getting your fingers sore from one game if you tap the buttons properly. Overall, Nintendo and Hudson have done a good job on this.
Graphics:
Once again, Nintendo DS at it's best. The models look like some of the models from Mario Hoops 3 on 3, particularly Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi. The others also look great, and they've also made the 2-D sprites look good as well. The good thing is, 2-D sprites aren't used much, only for text and buttons. You'll find there are some good graphics, like hamburgers and rafts, to giant meatlogs and giant Shy Guys. They look great!
Sound and Music:
The music in this game has gone towards a sort of Bass feel, with lots of it coming out of the speakers, but it's more noticeable with headphones on though. The music really fits together, it's not all mixmatched, and most of the tunes are quite catchy. The sound, however, is good, but when you hear Waluigi and Toad, you'll think, "WTF?!?!". Waluigi sounds like he's got the most stuffed nostrils in history, and Toad just plain doesn't sound like Toad, but you get used to it. Could've been improved, but hey, it's sound, it doesn't hinder my experience.
Overall:
This game is great for fans of Mario Party. With 5 fairly good game boards, with the last one being my favourite, you'll find they can be fun in short bursts. Say, one board a day, unless you're with friends, it'll be more playable. The boards aren't all generic house-like ones, they have a few Mario references in, one of them isn't even in a house. Actually, 3 for that matter! But they're still good. The game is good, the mini-games will have you laughing the first couple of times you play them, and this story is just about as good as Mario Party 3. There are Ultra-Awesome Boss Battles that are like big Mini-games, but they could've been harder, I mean, one of them is simple a game of 'Simon'... But aside from that, I'd recommend this to any Mario or Mario Party fan, or even to someone who wants a good game for friends.
I'd give this a big ol' 4 out of 5 Shy Guy Heads.
