Unlockable Characters:
Luigi:Beat the first level of adventure mode in a time ending with an even number then Defeat luigi and peach instead of mario and peach.
Dr.Mario: Beat Adventure with mario in any mode without Dying or Beat Classic with mario.
Jigglypuff:Beat classic or adventure. or do 50 vs. matches >_>
Young Link:Beat Classic or adventure with at least ten characters including Zelda and Link or do 500 vs. matches 0_-
Falco:Beat 100 Man melee or do 300 vs. matches. I think nintendo went insane with the amount of vs.
Pichu: Three ways:
1.Beat Classic With Mewtwo
2.Beat Event 37
3.200 vs. Matches
Mewtwo: Have at least 20 combined hours of vs. play or do 700 vs. matches
Mr.Game & Watch: Clear target test, Classic or adventure with all 20 characters or have 1,000 vs. matches
Marth: Use the original 14 characters in vs. at least once or do more than 400 vs. matches.
Roy:Clear classic mode with Marth without losing a life or do 900 vs. matches.
Ganondorf: Beat event 29.

Kiby's Dreamland:Hit a home run 1,323 ft. or more with yoshi.
Flatzone: Unlock and beat classic mode with game & watch
Infinite Glacier: Play 150 vs. matches.
Brinstar Depths: Play 50 vs. Matches.
Fourside: Beat 100 vs. matches.
Big Blue:Play 150 Vs. matches.
Poke Floats:Play 150 Vs. matches.
Mushroom Kingdom 2:Get the Birdo or Pidgit trophy.
Battlefield: Beat all-star.
Final Destination: Clear all 51 event matches.

It's funny how doing a certain number in vs matches gets you new characters as well. It's basically being rewarded for either being good at single player, or playing/winning a lot of multiplayer matches.
