Last time I made a review, it was about the Looney Tunes, and so is this one. This time, however, not only is this game enjoyable, it’s downright spectacular. Why? It’s of a different genre that I know a lot of people like: sports.
STORY
I received this game as a gift when I was 7. It came with no box, or instruction manual. So, here’s the story based off of my own perspective:
Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck have finished shooting for another cartoon. They begin conversing, and Bugs brings up basketball. Daffy is sure he’ll beat Bugs, but then, the basketball turns into a dog (???), and runs off. Exasperated, Bugs and Daffy run off set to go get the ball and hoop it up with 6 other Tunes.
Well, it’s a sports game. What more do you want from a story? Also, the game is also from 1994, so… yeah.
No Score Necessary/10
GRAPHICS
1994. This was one of the final years of the SNES. So, grading accordingly, the graphics are quite nice. Fully animated and colored sprites provide a nice feel, and fluid animations for dunks and such work well. The menu is nicely done, and the full pictures of the characters on the select screen are nice for the time.
8.5/10 (1994)
5/10 (2008)
SOUND
Quite well. All of the characters have a line or two that they say when they get a dunk, 3-pointer, or a couple of blocks in a row. The overall sound of the game is quite satisfying, and the music intensifies as more points are scored, a feature rarely seen nowadays.
9/10
GAMEPLAY
If the Wii has said anything, it’s that what matters most is gameplay. Even back in ’94, that’s all that should’ve mattered. And boy, that was this game’s selling point. It’s a 2-on-2 game of hoops (basketball), and it couldn’t be better. The B button shoots/blocks/rebounds, R/L was Turbo, and Y was pass/steal. Now, since this IS Loney Tunes, the game isn’t strictly hoops. There are multiple specials at your disposal on offense, and a few on defense. On offense, there’s things to take out opponents temporarily, increase chances of a 3-point shot, teleport you to the other side of the court, and multipliers. On defense, you can get an easy steal, or teleport to the other end of the court. They work well and interfere with gameplay enough to be satisfying and fun (think Mario Kart/Strikers), but not too much to be a pain in the ass.
10/10
EXTRAS AD CHARACTERS
There are 8 characters to choose from, each with different stats. The characters are BugsBunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Wile E. Coyote, Tasmanian Devil, Yosemite Sam, Sylvester, and Marvin Martian. Each character is totally different from the next, making for a variety in team-making. There aren’t any extras, really… just straight-up, bare bones basketball. There are many in-game codes to discover, but none are necessary to enjoy the game.
OVERALL
An excellent 2D basketball game with wacky Looney Tune flair provides a pick-up and play experience similar to that of Mario sport entries. The big factor: it’s stood the test of time (13 years), and is still overwhelmingly enjoyable, especially with friends.
