Apparently, Mario was in a great battle with Bowser. But for the first time ever, he was defeated! Dragged away by Toad while Bowser basked in his glory, the Toads made an attempt at repairing the mangled hero, limbs torn from plumber and tossed aside in the heat of the battle. But Toads are not battlefield surgeons, and apparently are only good at giving out stars, baking cakes, and telling you that the princess is in another castle. However, this did not stop them from trying, and after a long and bloody operation, they attempted to put our hero back together. But, alas, they were unable to put humpty-dumpty back together the way he was, and so, limbs were scattered across the plumber's body in an ugly display, but, at least, the bleeding had stopped and Mario was put back together. However, he'd also had his voice box damaged, beyond repair. And voice boxes aren't just found lying around, so Toad dug up Peach (yes, she's dead. She's been dead, actually. The newer ones are just decoys. What, you didn't really think that Bowser just kept her alive each time she was captured, do you?)...and removed her voice box, since they'd been able to preserve the body through powerful Mushroom Kingdom. They performed a transplant and gave Mario a voice...though rather feminine. But still weak, Mario was immediately recaptured by Bowser after the operation, and trapped in the power of the castle! Toad then hired a rogue Japanese sign mercenary to take back Mario, and, well, you know the rest.
