but slightly hectic if all in the same race...

how about this:
split 16 people into two groups.
each group will compete in 4 races and then the lower half will be eliminated.
then the remaing eight will split into 2 groups of four and compete in 4 races.
the lower half at the end will be eliminated from both again and then...
the remaining 4 will compete in the finals.

sounds "perfect" for me and should be called "MK Tourney Mode [via WFC]"

I would want both options. Heck, I think an option on wifi to organise tournaments would absolutely RULE! Similar to Super Smash Bros Melee would be a good way.

^So do I. I personally though am waiting for at the very least, Super Paper Mario or Super Mario Galaxy, or Super Smash Bros Brawl or Mario Kart Wii to release before buying (as in, whatever one of them is out soonest, like Super Paper Mario). That way I can have two of the best games for Wii on launch rather than just one.
