At Gamefaqs, and the Nsider forums, there is a mth about a legendary tactic called 'worming'. Now I was wondering why I did not know about it when I worked out why it did not actually exist!
First, no one user of the technique actually tells exactly how to do the trick, and each time they are asked, it comes out as a different explanation. Here are two quotes about 'worming' related to this:
QUOTE Worming is not using 'snaking'!
This first lie is easily destroyed. The point of using constant SSMTs is to go faster than if you just held the A button. This is basically saying the rubbish that not using SSSMTs is better than using them. Hence it is a lie.
QUOTE Worming is constantly drafting to go faster.
Okay, I admit it, drafting is faster. But note what drafting is, to stay in the slipstream behind a vechicle. Wait, behind a vechicle? Then how can you go faster by staying behind them? It defies all laws of physics! Hence it is fake.
Another reason it is fake is that no user of 'worming' actually shows people it, or a video of it's usage. Now this spells suspicious with a capital S as the finder of a real trick is likely to show people and boast they found it!
Finally, I have real proof it does not exist. In this post:

Stelzig admits it is false. Case closed.
