In all fairness, most people have gotten used to the ? Mark blocks as a fairly benign, albeit unexplained element of the Mario series. Everyone knows they hold items and coins, that they're just waiting to be hit by Mario or Luigi for the power ups, and the Mario and Luigi series even made odd new storylines based around them, concluding with the race of block based characters found in Bowser's Inside Story.
But how many people recall exactly how the original Super Mario Bros defined the backstory of the blocks Mario and Luigi encountered. Have a short read, it's kind of surprising and extremely dated now:

Assuming the bricks refer to the blocks, this leaves some incredibly difficult questions for the rest of the series. What the hell are Mario and Luigi doing when they smash them to pieces or hit the ? mark blocks for the items? This is a thought that has disturbed many, many people on internet forums who have thought too much about the Mario series, and might be why this 'Broque Monsieur' part refuses to trade with them.
But then the question is... what the heck are those block people in the Mario series made of exactly? Are they actually cursed by Bowser? Then... considering it's Bowser who's the only one they sell items to and what not, it's rather ironic, considering who the original curse giver might well have been.
