New Super Mario Bros Cannons
This page tells you what the Cannons in New Super Mario Bros are all about, and why the background in each cannon level is significant to the actual cannon. The purpose is to blast Mario ahead exactly three worlds (except in world 1), and to allow the best players to skip whole worlds, like the warp whistles in Mario Bros 3, and Star Road in Super Mario World. They are all entered via a secret exit, often from the Ghost House.
World 1
The world 1 cannon takes Mario to world 5, and is entered from a secret exit in the first tower level. The background as you can see in the picture is of mountains, and those icy mountains are meant to obviously resemble World 5, as world 5 is a snowy world.
World 2
This cannon takes Mario to world 5 also, and is entered via a secret exit in level 2-A. There is a lone mountain between the pyramids, and I believe this is also to resemble world 5, as world 5 is an ice world.
World 3
This cannon takes Mario to world 6, and is entered via the secret Ghost House exit. There are rocky mountains in the far background, past the low hills, and that is to resemble world 6, as world 6 is set in high, barren mountains and valleys.
World 4
This cannon is entered through the world 4 ghost house, and takes Mario all the way to the other secret world, world 7. It has many clouds behind the trees, and that is appropiate as world 7 is set high in the sky.
This final cannon is reached through the world 5 ghost house secret exit, and takes Mario all the way to world 8. The murky, dark sky is the same as world 8's general background, and is representative of Bowser's evil world.
