Regular Mario

Regular Mario is the regular and default form of Mario who can use in the game. He dies after hitting any enemy or obstacle once, and has no special powers he can use for various purposes. He is short enough also to go under many hanging obstacles without ducking

Super Mario

Super Mario is the powered up form of regular Mario. You get this power ater collecting a mushroom which appears out of any block in a level which would give you a power up as regular Mario. Once you're super Mario, you can collect fire flowers from blocks, break bricks and take 1 hit to revert back to regular Mario before dying.

Fire Mario

Fire Mario is the second form of Mario while powered up, this time after collecting a fire flower. He has much the same abilities, but with one new one, he can throw fireballs by pressing the dash button. Just to answer this, your own fire attacks do not hurt you. Getting hit reverts him back to Super Mario.

Shell Mario

Shell Mario is a powered up form of Mario that is different from the others here. For example, the power up is not found in ordinary blocks. This means you have to get it from winged blocks with randomly appear in a level in each world, flashing blocks which give either a mushroom, flower, star, blue shell or mini mushroom, in a Toad House or after defeating a Hammer Bro. This ppower up allows Mario to wear a blue shell, and when he dashes, he automatically dukcs inside the shell and gets sent flying across the level at high speeds until he hits a wall and gets sent back the other way. When in this form, he's invincible to most enemies and can hurt bosses. Also, if he ducks, he is immune to all obstacles inside his shell.

Mega Mushroom

The Mega mushroom is one of the best items you can get in the game, and is the most powered up form of Mario except for the star. When the Mega Mushroom is active, Mario becomes absolutely huge, taking of a ton of the screen. He can then simply walk around and destroy any enemy, block, cannon, some walls, pipes and anything else that gets in his way just by touching it! And best of all, in boss battles, one jump on the bosses head kills the boss in one hit!

Mini Mushroom

The mini mushroom is a very odd item, and that's because the benefits aren't really that obvious. It shrinks Mario down to a tiny size, and this at first seems bad, as you can damage enemies normally and one hits kills him

But the advantages are many. For one, he can run on water in this form, allowing him to jump off the surface of the water like a platform. He can also jump extremely high and float around for quite a bit, making tricky jumps much easier. And he can also enter small pipes with secret rooms, often holding much money or a star coin, sometimes with micro goombas as well! And, only by using him to beat bosses 2 and 5 can you reach the secret worlds of 4 and 7!

Star

The star, is a rare item. But the use of this is that it makes Mario or Luigi totally invincible to any hazard, and be able to destroy any enemy in one shot! The only disadvantage is that most people find it easier to use the mega mushroom

Item effects

The chart below shows the effect of each item of each form of Mario. For example, if you want to find out what would happen if shell Mario got a Mega Mushroom, follow the green line upwards. If you want to know what would happen if mini Mario go a mushroom, follow the blue line from that form to the next. In this case, it goes to Super Mario, so a mushroom would turn mini-Mario to super Mario.

Inventory or Mario, what happens when you pick up an item?

Okay, so you know how an item effects Mario? But now, learn this; If the item is better than the one Mario has, it changes Mario to that form. If not, it goes into the inventory. If there's an item there, it checks if it is better than that item, and if so, replaces it. If not, Mario just gets 1000 points and the item disappears. Same if the item is of equal effect.

This how the chain goes:

There is an exception though. The mini mushroom will overide the effect of most other items, but it's own effect is overwritten when Mario picks up any other item. The reason for this chain though, is that in Super Mario World, you could lose a good item in your inventory by picking up a worse item. I think they fixed it to make the game easier and make it so only items of higher value than that in your inventory could be stored. Oh, and the Mega Mushroom overides anything else you have.
