Pokemon Games

Pokemon Red and Blue

These two games were the first games ever in the series, and were released for the original Gameboy console. The general story is that your character wants to become a top pokemon trainer and catch 151 pokemon, as well as getting all the badges and defeating the Elite Four.

The general aim is you have to catch pokemon by lowering their health (the lower their health is, the better your chances of catching them when you throw a pokeball) then disable them by freezing them/putting them to sleep. You then throw a pokeball and hopefully catch them. There are 151 in all (including Mew).

You advance through the story and game however by defeating the gym leaders in each town to get 8 badges which then be used to enter the final area of the game, and defeat the Elite Four. Each leader trains a different type of monster, so you have to use ones which have an advantage over that type (or are ten times stronger or so) to win. The way battle works is that you choose a move, use it, hit or miss the opponent and the other pokemon attacks yours (or misses badly). If you win, you get exp and perhaps money while if you lose, you black out and end up in the last pokecentre you visited, with your team at full health. You can carry six pokemon at a time.

There are also numerous types, which effect the damage a pokemon takes from certain attacks. For example, a fire pokemon takes double damage from water, and a grass pokemon takes half damage from a water attack. However, take into mind the level difference, as a level 100 Charizard would easily destroy a level 5 squirtle in any battle.

The only difference between the Red and Blue versions is there are a few pokemon you can only get in one version (barring the Mew glitch) and some only catchable in the other. There is no plot line difference like the Gameboy Advance games or legendary strength level difference like Gold and Silver.

Pokemon Gold and Silver

These games are literally a step up from the originals. There are now 100 extra pokemon to catch, raising it to 251, and the game looks a million times better. There is also a day and night mechanic, where different pokemon only appear at night, and one only evolves into a certain form at night.

There are also two new types, steel and dark, with steel being bad against fire but good against rock, while dark types are immune to psychic attacks. This can easily change the problem of Mewtwo/Mew and now Luigia being much tougher than any other pokemon you can fight.

There is also a phone, where you can record a trainers phone number. This allows them to call you back so you can fight them again in a rematch (they sadly are no better than the first time).

There is also now a second notable difference between versions. For example, in Gold, you catch Ho-oh at level 40, allowing you to make it really powerful while in Silver you catch Luigia at that level, allowing you to make that really powerful. The other one is then caught at a later date at level 70, which is tougher at first but weaker at level 100.

There are also now shiny pokemon which are mega rare and are different colours, plus pokerus which is a virus allowing them to gain more exp from fighting.

Finally, you can also go back to Kanto, from the original game and fight the original 8 gym leaders plus a secret trainer who is way tougher than any of the others you can face.

Pokemon Gold Team

The only flaw was that I had two fire types, but if I replaced one with say a steel or ghost type, I would be invincible.
