1 up Locations List
A quick guide to the locations of every single 1 up mushroom in Super Mario Galaxy. Yeah, some of these are out the way, others are in easy to reach and obvious places. But none the less, this may really help you if you happen to totally suck at this game.
Quick Hints for 1 ups
- Before a difficult section, there will almost always be a 1 up mushroom lying around as if to give you infinite retries.
- Blue crabs always leave a 1 up on defeat.
- Some of these only appear during Comet missions such as purple comet challenges. Every mission usually has a few different ones from the norm.
- Apart from this guide, you can also get 1 ups for every 50 Star Bits you collect and every 50 coins you collect.
- This may not be 100% complete. Because even I can miss some.
Terrace Dome
Good Egg Galaxy
Collect the 1 up after getting all the music notes in the room you enter after going down the orange pipe.
Go down the green pipe on the second boulder planet to reach a flip switch area. It's above a tile on the second part of this area.
Behind the ledges with many Cosmic Bloopers on, a planet or two away from Dino Piranha.
In an alcove behind some spiky plants.
Behind a raising and lowering block in the gravity puzzle pill planet.
Honeyhive Galaxy
On a ledge behind the small fence at the start of the level.
Behind the hole leading to the slide.
You know where the launch star is in the first mission? The 1 up is in that spot in the second, third and sixth missions.
On a lone flower in the area before the castle of the Queen Bee.
On a branch to the side of the big tree planet where you fight Bugaboom. There is a short line of coins on the branch which lead to it.
Bowser Jr's Robot Reactor
In a cage on the planet with the black hole before you fight Megaleg.
Above the back leg (third leg) of Megaleg.
Fountain Dome
Battlerock Galaxy
In a cage under the last platform in Battlerock Barrage.
In a crate underneath the platform nearest the pull star minefield.
In the minefield.
In a cage near the second star in the level, near the cannon.
Above a hollow wheel type platform.
Buy from the Item Shop on Topmaniac's Ship.
Bowser's Star Reactor
In a crystal on the multi coloured path at the beginning.
The Kitchen Dome
Beach Bowl Galaxy
On a rock pillar in the sea.
In the first star, get the music notes and appears above where the wooden bridge appears when you hit a switch.
In a treasure chest on the sea floor.
Defeat one of the eels.
On the cylone stone, on a platform near the first Thwomp.
On a green platform near some Tox Boxes.
Ghostly Galaxy
In a painting. Collect the ? coin to make it fall out.
Inside the right Bowser statue on the second wall area (third star)
Above a pink bouncy ball shaped planet with many mines.
Buy from the Luma Shop before Bouldergeist.
Bowser Jr's Airship Armada
Aim the first cannon at a small planet with many goombas. Kill them all for a 1 up.
Buy from a Luma shop on the ship before the moving platform.
In the path of the moving platform.
In a glass cage on the ship where you fight Bowser Jr. Break the cage will a Bullet Bill to release it.
The Bedroom Dome
Gusty Gardens Galaxy
On the platform with three piranha plants and a money bag enemy, kill one to make a vine appear. Now make another vine appear by hitting the seed on the underside of the planet and ride the first vine to the 1 up (if you only use the first one, the vine will send you off the planet to Mario's death).
When you reach a ton of small rounded planets, kill a purple piranha plant on one of them and ride the vine that appears to the 1 up mushroom.
On the spiral planet with many spiky vines coiled around it.
Above the rising and falling blocks at the start of the Gravity Scramble puzzle.
Freezeflame Galaxy
On the ice mountain (first star), above two stacked ? blocks.
Above the second fountain jet leading to the summit and the secret star.
On a green disappearing platform near the summit where some walls try to push you off.
In the second star, behind the area where you light the torches is a ? coin. Collect the music notes that appear by wall jumping up the shaft for the mushroom.
In Hot and Cold Collide, behind a set of breakable blocks in an alcove in the rising water room.
On top of one of the buildings in the room where the lava rises.
On a stone platform in the obstacle course where you must skate on lava as ice Mario to reach the star.
Dusty Dunes Galaxy
In the first star, above one of the Tornadoes.
Above the middle Thwomp in an 2D area with a life mushroom.
Above a Thwomp by some spinning circular platforms in a 2D area.
Near the second chicken enemy in the first star, near the end of the flowing quick sand.
In the inside area with Tweesters on a small island near a Thwomp.
Above said Thwomp.
On a small ledge in the area on the other side of the hole.
When you reach a planet with fast flowing quick sand and platforms going towards you, go the other way from the star launcher and jump across the platforms while avoiding lasers to reach a pipe. Collect the music notes to make three 1 up mushrooms appear.
In the final star, it's on a pillar in the area at the start where the sand rises.
On the spiky plant planet where the launcher to the secret star is, kill the blue crab.
On the Pokey Planet, it's on a small platform in the sand flowing downwards.
Bowser's Dark Matter Plant
In the first gravity area, it's above one of the L shaped moving platforms.
Above the bottom most moving platform in the area where Dark Matter is eating away holes in the floor.
In a crystal near a vertical path moving to a latter Dark Matter gravity area.
In the final gravity area in the air.
Engine Room Dome
Gold Leaf Galaxy
Under a bridge by the big tree.
Use a bubble to reach a ? coin on the big tree, and follow the star bits to the one up mushroom.
Sea Slide Galaxy
Defeat the eel in the left tunnel (the one which you follow Guppy through in the first mission).
Kill the blue crab on the planet in the centre of Sea Slide, which you reach by following a stream of water.
Collect the music notes on said centre planet.
When collecting the silver star near the Star Shroom Spaceship, fling towards it from the nearby pull star.
Toy Time Galaxy
In the second area of the Mecha Bowser star, wall jump up the area between two vertical pipes to the left of the area to reach it.
On a red block near the green pipe in the second area of star 1.
On the hand of Mecha Bowser which has two claws.
In the second cake area of Cake Lane, collect the music notes down the green pipe, in a bonus room with many spiky plants.
Above the Undergrunt Gunner's electric cannon at the end of Cake Land. You need to bounce off the top of the cannon to reach it.
Bowser Jr's Lava Reactor
In a glass cage which you can break with a Bullet Bill. This is on the small planet you start on.
Garden Dome
Deep Dark Galaxy
Defeat the blue crab on the main beach area.
In a chest at the bottom of the sea in the main beach area.
In a pipe on top of the cliffs. Once you are in, collect the music notes which play the Super Mario World Bonus Game theme music to make the 1 up mushroom appear near the top.
Defeat the eel near the bottom of the main sea area.
Melty Molten Galaxy
When using pull stars to go past the mini lava planets, it is at the bottom of the area. Go down at the point near the launch star and use the pull star to catapult yourself to it.
Behind a crystal on a ledge right of where you wall jump up the lava spire.
On a collapsing platform attached to the side of the spire, near the top.
Under the third Thwomp on the ring planet with a black hole (through the Meteor Storm, planet 2).
On a platform in the ball rolling section, right in front of you.
On a platform to the right in the ball rolling section.
Above a brick block on an island where Star Bits are circling round.
Buy from Luma Shop before using launch star to go and fight the Fiery Dino Piranha.
Dreadnought Galaxy
When you go inside in the first star, change the gravity and retrace your steps to find it (it used to be hovering high in the air before you changed the gravity direction).
In a glass cage beside the very bottom of the shaft that two walls move up. Get a bob-omb from the top of the shaft and break it with that I suppose.
On a platform on the very last planet of the 1st star, on a platform near the end.
In the first area of star two (Dreadnought's Colossal Cannons), drop down and blow up a glass cage with a bob-omb.
Above a Thwomp in the area with the cannons and moving platforms.
On the third mission, you visit a metal planet where you must defeat two Topmen to free a Luma. The mushroom is on the highest pillar.
On the cube planet, it's high in the air. Bounce up off of the green topman to reach it.
In the area with cannons and pull stars, it's floating in the air.
In the area with many lasers and rocky wrenches, open the furthest treasure chest with a koopa shell to reveal this 1 up mushroom.

Secret Galaxy 1 ups
Sweet Sweet Galaxy
Above one of the later bends in the level path.
Loopdeeloop Galaxy
At the end of a line of three coins near the first major bend in the track.
Flipswitch Galaxy
No 1 up mushrooms in the level
Slingpod Galaxy
In between a ring of barriers circling around.
Hurry Scurry Galaxy
On a green tile just before the area with two Toads and the launch star.
Rolling Green Galaxy
On a stone on an island with a few goombas.
Drip Drop Galaxy
In a treasure chest on the sea floor.Bubble Breeze Galaxy
Being circled by two mines just before the island with the star.
Buoy Base Galaxy
On a grassy ledge near the top of the main tower.
Big Mouth Galaxy
In the deep sea weed in the first area with the many Boos.
Kill the Blue crab on the beach.
Honeyclimb Galaxy
On the third wall (with the Mandibugs), there's a lone honey comb to the far left with this on it.
Sand Spiral Galaxy
In the middle of the water shooters, above a gap in the metal fence.
Bonefin Galaxy
In a treasure chest on the sea floor.
Boo's Boneyard Galaxy
In the shortcut passage, just behind the first crystal wall.
Snowcap Galaxy
No 1 up mushrooms in level.
Matter Splatter Galaxy
On top of a pillar right near the start.
In the area with Spring Mario, above a sea saw.
Above the left column near the start of the final area.
Above the right column near the start of the final area, high in the air.
