Super Mario Galaxy Bosses
If you are stuck on any boss in the game, this minor guide should hopefully help. And yes, this covers every single boss fight there is regardless of how well known or difficult the boss actually is.

Dino Piranha
To defeat this Petey Piranha like dinosaur, you must first spin attack the sphere on it's tail to smash it's egg form. Then, you must smash the sphere with the spin attack three more times to defeat it in the Good Egg Galaxy.
King Kaliente
Another easy boss, this is slightly more difficult than the Dino Piranha. First, avoid the flaming rocks it spits in groups of three, and when a coconut is fired, smash it back at the boss. The next time, the boss returns the attack, so smash it back a second time to hit and knock off the crown. Finally, avoid the fiery enemies it spits out and repeat your strategy one more time to fry this boss.
Bugaboom
Now, this may look quite intimidating. However, it is an extremely easy boss just like the last two, so don't panic! First, ground pound it's back as it is walking around to make the boss grow wings. Now, get above the boss and pound it's back to make it fly faster and also turn sideways. One final ground pound above it when it flies flat will finish off Bugaboom.
Megaleg
Whoa, that is one massive robot! Never the less, it's another easy boss to defeat. First, wait until it stomps and climb up the arrow part of it's leg (this sets off a warning alarm). Keep going and avoid the Bullet Bill cannons, and jump across the cogs. Now, lure one Bullet Bill into the control centre on top of the robot and another alarm will sound, raising a fence around the target. You can now either smash the fence and lure a Bullet Bill through the gap to the target, or lure one OVER the fence towards the target. One more hit to the Grand Star cover will cause this boss to explode.
Kamella
Kinda reminds you of Kamek, right? Oh well. First, the boss will probably fire a fireball at Mario/Luigi, so dodge it and wait until she shoots a shell. Spin to catch the shell and fire it back at Kamella to cause damage. After the second hit, the boss will summon two Magikoopas to help in battle, so ignore/destroy them and concentrate on fighting Kamella. One more hit will finish this boss battle and cause the wand to smash, freeing the star.
Tarantox
This is where the boss battles may get a little trickier, partly because of the awkward camera angle and running direction. First though, break the object in the centre of the web to reveal the spider boss Tarantox. It has multiple green dots and one large one on it's back. Hit the large spot to flip it over and reveal three large targets. Fire yourself at them with sling pods to break them and hurt the boss, turning it red (and angry). Avoid the acid it spits and repeat to send it flying into space.
Note: You can use the Toad as a weapon.
Topmaniac
A cool looking boss, but a right wimp in battle. It starts by flying down... and just staying in one place. You can either do the slightly harder way (kill the small enemies and bash Topmaniac on the head when it starts moving) or the easier way (just go straight for Topmaniac). When it's stunned from the jump to the target on it's head, spin it into the electric fence. It will eventually call out tougher minions, but repeat the process as usual. This is not a difficult boss by far, and if you ever run low on health, you can just jump out the arena and get some coins from the nearby enemies (or buy a Mushroom from the Luma Shop nearby).
Bowser (fight 1)
Now, before you start, remember that this is actually one of the more difficult fights in the first third of the game. Although Bowser is still easy which means that isn't saying much. But never the less, watch out.
When you land on the round planet, avoid the shockwaves and stand above a blue spot on the floor. Bowser with pound it and smash into the lava, setting his tail on fire. He then runs around the platform, so spin him when you get nearby to make him retreat into his shell, and spin once more to damage him. Now, he fires some fireballs and causes more shockwaves, so avoid them and repeat the process. Finally, he gets even angrier, but use the same tactic to defeat him and gain your third Grand Star in the game.
Notes: You can get him to smash the raised points for more coins, and the flattened area underneath for starbits.
Bouldergeist
Be very aware, the difficulty is now going to shoot up fast in the battles afterward. Okay, when you land on the platform, a ton of boulders will gather together and form what looks like a Bogmire shadow made of stone, which happens to be Bouldergeist. Now when he throws some rocks, avoid them until the black rocks become Bomb Boos, and swing them at Bouldergeist to hurt him. Repeat twice to smash the boss to a head, and then use another one to hit the red glowing part.
He will then reform with giant stone hands. These can do more attacks like pounding the ground and punching, so keep moving! Also, remember to avoid the shadows on the ground; this is where pointy rocks will shoot up from beneath. Hit the main body three more times to reduce him to a head, and hit the red glowing part once more to destroy Bouldergeist.
Notes: Destroy the hands with two bomb boos swung into each.
Note: Gold rocks become coins when they touch the ground.
Note: You can swing many Bomb Boos at once to multiply the damage on contact with an enemy.
Bowser Jr
Bowser's son finally fights Mario hand to hand in a 3D game? Yep, and he's a damn well difficult boss to defeat. He appears in a mini airship when you reach the grand, final airship in the armada, and sits in the distance during the whole fight? So how do you kill him? Just jump on Koopas and throw the shells at him/his ship. After three hits, it turns sideways and more enemies often appear. Finally, after the fourth hit, tons of Bullet Bills and missiles get fired, so dodge them and hit him once more for yet another grand star.
Note: If you fire a starbit at him, he falls over and dozens of them fall on the ship for you to collect.
Major Burrows
You may not want to fight this boss. Simply because he's attempting to eat that annoying star rabbit you had to catch for the previous star, and anyone who hates rabbit chasing may just wish they could let the bunny become this boss' lunch. Never the less, you have to fight and defeat him to get another star, so here's how to beat him.
First, ground pound when he comes out of the ground as he's chasing the rabbit. He'll be stunned, so spin into him to cause damage. And guess what? He gets extremely angry and now is 100% focused on trying to kill Mario, so run like heck until he comes out the ground again. Ground pound. He'll slowly try to walk away, so spin him again. Now, he gets so mad steam comes out of his ears and the shell on his head turns red. Run like hell from the now very fast mole and ground pound when he comes out. He'll dive back in. Next, he'll just charge like a maniac, so pound again and spin attack him once more to defeat this boss.
Baron Brr
No, this is not really anything like Chief Chilly in attack or most of his appearance. Instead, he is a giant ice creature with a crown that fires ice particles like an erupting volcano from the top of a mini mountain.
When you reach him, he'll fire the ice particles quite quickly, so avoid them unless you want to get frozen. Now get an ice flower, and wall jump up to him. Spin attack him to make him small, and do it again to hurt him. After the next hit, small ice creatures will help him in battle, so just continue the process until you eventually defeat this strange creature.
Bowser (fight 2)
Now, this is MOSTLY the same as fight one, so do what is the usual strategy with these exceptions:
- You must avoid his shockwaves and then his spin attacks. Otherwise he just constantly spin attacks you.
- There are no lights to destroy in the ground.
- He does up to five stomps to cause shockwaves.
Mecha Bowser
This is not really a boss, more a level. Never the less, the game seems to treat it like one, with the special music and all so it will be covered here. When you start, go and wall kick up the left leg area, and spin the screw. Go down the pipe and spin the one on the other side to make a sling star appear, and launch to side panel on it's body. Spin the four screws to reveal a pipe and go down it.
Now, you are approaching his arm. Avoid the Mecha Koopas, and jump on the top of his arm, and then on the green part on the arms side. Avoid the bats and undo a screw to make a launch star appear. Use it before you fall to reach the head.
Now, go down the path (with or without the Spring Mario transformation) and when you get to the head, you either back flip, wall kick and spin (without the suit) or just bounce up (with the spring ability). Avoid the laser enemy and get to the very top of the head. Now, either jump, wall kick and spin or bounce to land on the stone blocks, and pound to destroy Mecha Bowser.
Undergrunt Gunner (Cake Lane electric version)
The blue electric mole that will annoy you to no end in this game? Yep, and this is the very difficult fight with it where it shoots damaging electric bolts. Here, get the spring suit (I hope you have a mushroom, you'll need it) and bounce on top of the cannon which is on the jar. Pound the cannon top to damage the mole. This speeds him up, so repeat. Finally, he can turn electric which throws you off, so wait until the coast is clear and pound on the top of his vehicle once again.
Undergrunt Gunner (Easy Gold Leaf Water Cannon Version)
Him again? Well, this version is the main one, and one of the easiest bosses in the entire game. If you still have your Bee Suit, fly up to the cannon when he takes a break from the water cannon firing and pound the top of it. If you don't, you can hit a switch and use some platforms to smash the mole. Either way, there is really very little that can be advised with such an easy boss.
Kamella (Ghost Ship Battle)
For the first part of the battle, it should be incredibly easy and just like the first battle since you have plenty of room, health refills and all kinds of niceities. However, it then gets pretty tricky after hit number 2, when the battle gets suddenly moved to the crow's nest of the ship AND two Magikoopas start attacking! Here, you really need to watch the screen very carefully, because one wrong move and poor Mario. Keep at the usual tactic until you win the star.
Undergrunt Gunner
He's back. He's also become the far easiest boss in the game for the simple reason that you have the whole of Deep Dark Galaxy to battle him in, and only the beach area has him causing you any real annoyance. But if you actually want to fight him (you really need the ice flower because you just cannot wall kick), do one of these three things:
- Hit him three times with a ground pound
- Kick a coconut at him three times
- Throw a shell at the top of the cannon three times
Topmaniac
Anyone thought he would be more difficult? Nope, he's practically the same difficulty as earlier, and still doesn't lock you in the arena. The only difference is that he always has two red topmen as allies, but you can pretty much just ignore them. This will be lucky for you when you play the speedrun and have a tiny amount of time to beat the boss.
Fiery Dino Piranha
Now, if you think this is going to be as easy as last time, stop and listen. It is far, far more difficult in this battle than the incredibly weak Dino Piranha of the Good Egg Galaxy near the beginning. That said, here is how to win.
First, wait until his tail goes out, then spin attack it to smash the egg. You now have to fight him as usual, but watch out! Don't touch him or the ground behind him when he is on fire, wait until his tail gets put out and spin attack as usual. On the second hit, he will go beserk and also start flinging fireballs around. This is when you have to be strategic (he's very, very fast) and patient. Eventually you'll win the star.
Kingfin
As you enter the battle, the ominous jaws type theme starts and the teeth of this creature appear, eventually panning out to reveal... a 50 foot long skeletal shark with sinister glowing eyes! Yeah, this boss will make you scared out your wits at first, but be calm. There is a way to beat him.
First, find a shell (red is homing if you can't aim well underwater) and fire it at Kingfin. He'll glow red a bit and get hit. This then summons two robotic piranha fish that work like Torpedo Teds (underwater Bullet Bill missiles). Keep swimming quickly to stay out their way and keep your health and air up. After the third hit, FOUR of those things appear. Hit Kingfin twice more to see an awesome explosion scene and get your hard earned star.
Final Bowser Battle
The final showdown awaits! As the star says, it is literally the 'Fate of the Universe' and Princes Peach is held by Bowser Jr. Can you win this fight? Of course you can, and I'll make your task even easier!
In stage 1, Bowser gathers a ton of rocks around himself and tries to mow you down as a massive boulder. You should know how to break normal rocks, right? Well Bowser isn't that different, so spin at his head to send him spinning across the stage like usual. Then spin attack him again. Second hit requires you to spin attack him twice after he slides away, but you'll make it to stage 2.
Now, he rolls around as a spiky shell ball. Smash a plant into him to smash him into a sliding shell, and spin attack him. Same kind of thing again to reach the final stage of the battle...
Which is just like the first two battles you had against him in the Star Reactor and Dark Matter Plant! Usual tactic applies, and two more uses of it will finally defeat Bowser! Now watch and enjoy the ending...
..even though it involves the universe being destroyed.
Daredevil Runs and Speed run Tasks
For these types of comets, you will often have to fight a boss. Daredevil places you straight at the boss with 1 health, and speed run makes you speed through the level and boss within a certain time limit. Here are the stars which are of this kind and are about bosses/involve boss fights:
- Dino Piranha Speed Run
- Topmaniac's Daredevil Run
- Bouldergeist's Daredevil Run
- Major Burrows's Daredevil Run
- Ghost Ship Daredevil Run
- Topman Tribe Speed Run
How to Identify a Boss
Are a moron who doesn't know what a boss is? Or how to know there's a boss in the level? Or how to know you are currently fighting a boss? Well this is the ten second guide to knowing whether you are in a boss battle or level (ten second exagerrated to one hundredth of actual reading time).
Star Bits, Lots of 'Em!
Does the enemy drop a ton of star bits after everything successful attack against them? That is a characteristic of bosses, since every single one in the game drops about 30 after every attack you land against them.
The Circular Platform
Are you fighting on a roughly circular piece of land? If so, that could be a sign, since boss fights often take place on circular platforms or rounded planets, as shown by Dino Piranha, King Kaliente, Tarantox, Topmaniac, Bouldergeist, Major Burrows, Baron Brr, Undergrunt Gunner, Fiery Dino Piranha, Megaleg and Bowser.
The Mushroom Lurks nearby
If you see a Life Mushroom nearby, then there is a good chance a boss battle is coming up, as every single boss but two forms of the Undergrunt Gunner have a Life Mushroom or Luma shop either in or beside their battle arena.
Huh? New Music!
Did the music change? Because most bosses have both a boss theme that plays in the battle and a 'Boss Nearby' theme that plays just before the battle area. For examples of this, see any boss arena and the areas before Tarantox and Topmaniac. Note the changes in music.
More than one hit
If you can kill it in one hit, it's likely not a boss. If not, it likely is.
