Koopalings
From The DS Ultimate Wiki
The Koopalings are Bowser's children, and the main villains of Super Mario Bros 3 and World. They are extremely popular characters which have a ton of fans, and they are returning to the Mario series with New Super Mario Bros Wii this year. There are seven Koopalings, called Iggy, Morton, Lemmy, Ludwig, Roy, Wendy and Larry. Their relation to Bowser Jr is unknown.
Physical Characteristics and Personality
Iggy Koopa
One of the younger Koopalings, and with bright green hair, he's the first one fought in Super Mario World, on a rotating platform in lava. He appears in the fourth world in Super Mario Bros 3, battling like the other Koopalings do. He is named after Iggy Pop.
Morton Koopa Jr
Named after Morton Downey Jr, Morton is one of the biggest (and in New Super Mario Bros Wii just biggest) Koopalings in the group. He has a brown type colouring and a bald white coloured head, and attacks in a similar way to Ludwig and Roy in Super Mario Bros 3. In World, he shares his attack pattern with Roy.
Lemmy Koopa
A relatively young Koopaling, and the smallest of the bunch, he has a rainbow coloured mohawk, lazy eye and a ponytail. He's found in World 6 in Super Mario Bros 3, fighting with a bunch of balls shot out (and balancing on one), and world 3 in Super Mario World, coming out of a bunch of pipes with two decoys in a similar way to Wendy O Koopa.
He's the main character of the website 'Lemmy's Land', and is named after Lemmy Kilmister.
Ludwig Von Koopa
Possibly the oldest of the Koopalings, he is named after the musician Ludwig Von Beethoven, and shares the wild hairstyle with his namesake. He's a pretty huge character, and fights in a similar way to Morton and Roy in Super Mario Bros 3. In Super Mario World however, he fights with his own style, shooting fire and spinning in his shell.
Roy Koopa
The biggest, meanest Koopaling in the original games, Roy Koopa has a bright pink (now purple in New Super Mario Bros Wii) shell and a bald head. He wears bright pink sunglasses, and is the boss of world 5 in both Super Mario Bros 3 and World. Some say his colouring is based on the joke that pink is a manly colour, and he attacks Mario by climbing walls and dropping down (World) or jumping across the room and causing earthquakes as he lands (Bros 3)
Named after Roy Orbison.
He's the centre of a meme song known as 'This is Not Roy's Castle'.
Wendy O Koopa
The only female Koopaling, she is described as having a bright pink shell and bow on her head (as well as lipstick and shoes). In Super Mario Bros 3, she battles like the other Koopalings, but shot giant rings of candy at Mario instead of standard magic blasts. She is named after Wendy O Williams. In Super Mario World, she shared an attack pattern with Lemmy Koopa.
Larry Koopa
The blue haired crazy Koopaling, he was interestingly found in the complete opposite worlds in the two early games he appeared in, being the first world boss in Super Mario Bros 3, and the final world boss in Super Mario World. In the former, he fought like the other Koopalings, while in the latter, he fought on a rotating platform like Iggy Koopa.
He is named after... unknown, possibly Larry King.
Appearances in the Mario series
Super Mario Bros 3
In their first appearance, the Koopalings got their design from the development staff of Super Mario Bros 3, and their names based on famous musicians and celebrities in the US translation. They all fought Mario in a similar style battle in an airship at the end of each world, where they jumped around the room while shooting magic blasts from their wands.
Super Mario World
In their second appearance, their names made it back into the Japanese game. Here, they appeared in a castle in each world, guarding one Yoshi egg each. There were four attack patterns here, which were:
- Pipes- The Koopaling would come out of pipes with two decoys, and you had to stomp the real one three times to win.
- Room- The Koopaling would run around the room, including the walls and ceilings, and try and fall on Mario. Again, they were defeated after three hits.
- Platform- The Koopaling is on a rotating platform in lava, sometimes shooting fire. You had to hit them to knock them off the platform into the lava.
- Ludwig's Attack Pattern- Ludwig shot three or so fireballs, span across the room in his shell, and jumped back across the room to try and crush Mario or Luigi.
Yoshi's Safari
They were bosses here too, and piloted giant robots to try and defeat Mario and Yoshi with. Their last main appearance for a long while.
Educational Games
The Koopalings were in Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine.
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
In an unexpected turn of events, they returned in Bowser's Castle of this game, under the control of Cackletta. They fought in different ways, some helped by a Bob-omb that would explode and defeat the bros if the Koopaling in question wasn't defeated in a set number of turns.
New Super Mario Bros Wii
Finally, they reappeared in this game, capturing Peach with the cake and fighting very much like their Super Mario Bros 3 selves.
In TV Shows
Super Mario Bros 3 Show
The Koopalings were the main villains in the Super Mario Bros 3 show, and acted more like Bowser's Children. However, they got renamed here to:

- Bully Koopa (Roy)
- Hop Koopa (Iggy)
- Kootie Pie Koopa (Wendy)
- Cheatsy Koopa (Larry)
- Big Mouth Koopa Jr (Morton)
Super Mario World
They also appeared as major villains here, acting in various minor evil plots to help Bowser conquer Dinosaur Land.
