New Super Mario Bros is a recent installment in the Super Mario Bros series on the Nintendo DS. The game is the first in a new sub series (with New Super Mario Bros Wii being announced) that is an attempt to bring back the 2D Super Mario Bros games on modern Nintendo consoles.

Characters
Important characters in New Super Mario Bros.
Mario
The main star of the game (and of course, the Mario series as a whole), Mario retains his usual abilities and has to rescue Peach from Bowser for probably the three hundredth time in the series.
Luigi
Mario's brother, he's a secret character that can be played as by holding down a certain button combination while starting the game. He has no differences in abilities, unlike in other remakes and Super Mario Bros 2.
Peach
Captured again by Bowser and Bowser Jr, she's eventually rescued from the final level by Mario/Luigi.
Bowser
Main villain, possibly the one who ordered Bowser Jr to capture Peach. He's fought twice as normal Bowser, and once as Dry Bowser in the game.
Bowser Jr
Bowser's son (one of eight in total), he captured Princess Peach after Lakithunder attacked the castle and caused a diversion.
Items
The items found in New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mushroom
A mushroom, that just like every 2D game in the series, makes Mario bigger and allows him to take an extra attack from an enemy before dying.
Fire Flower
A flower that gives Mario the ability to throw fireballs at enemies. If hit, he turns into Super Mario.
Blue Shell
A new item which allows Mario to duck inside the shell to avoid fire based attacks, spin dash across the stage quite fast and swim better underwater. Like the Fire Flower, he becomes Super Mario if attacked.
Mini Mushroom
A kind of new item (first seen in Mario Party 4) which makes Mario tiny. Here, he can go through small pipes and run on water, but he can't defeat enemies by jumping on them normally, and dies instantly if hit by an enemy or obstacle.
Mega Mushroom
A semi new item that makes Mario giant. Here, he's invincible, can smash down pipes, flagpoles and enemies just by walking right through them and gets 1 up Mushrooms when the transformation is over (and becomes Super Mario). However, he's not immune to instant death attacks, and can also break through the floor if it's weak,
1 Up Mushroom
The familar green mushroom that gives Mario an extra life.
Star
A rare item that allows Mario to become invincible and destroy any enemy he touches instantly.
Bosses
A list of bosses in the game.
Bowser
First boss, fought just like him and his fake duplicates in the original Super Mario Bros. Either fireball him to death, or jump over/under him and touch the axe to make him fall into the lava.
Mummipokey
A mummified pokey found as the boss of the second world, and defeating by jumping on it's head.
Cheepskipper
A giant cheep cheep found as the world 3 boss, along with two smaller Cheep Cheeps. He leaps out of the water to try and attack Mario, at which point fireballs or jumps can damage him.
Mega Goomba
An easy fourth boss, this is just a giant Goomba. He's defeated by ground pounding on his head three times.
Petey Piranha
Back from Super Mario Sunshine, Petey Piranha flies around the room and dive bombs Mario. He takes only two ground pounds when he's on the floor to be defeated (or a quick barrage of fireballs at said time).
Montytank
A Monty Mole in a tank found as the world 6 boss. He shoots Bullet Bills, Throws Bob-ombs and his tank becomes one section higher after each time he's damage.
Lakithunder
A lightning shooting Lakitu that may have attacked the castle at the start, he flies around while shooting lightning bolts, throwing spinies and dive bombing Mario/Luigi. He's defeated when you jump on his head as he dives down.
Dry Bowser
A skeleton form of Bowser that fights just like the normal form except being immune to fireballs.
Trivia and Resources
- This is the second main Super Mario Bros game without any form of flight.
- Despite being the main antagonists in Super Mario Bros 3 and World, the Koopalings for some reason do not appear here. Neither do Reznor or Boom Boom.
