Super Mario Galaxy is the latest 3D game in the Mario series by Nintendo, and is a game seen by many as a masterpiece of game design. It introduces a decent amount of motion controls, more levels than the last games and the returns of many classic enemies and objects from the past.

Storyline

The storyline is pretty much Super Mario 64 in space at first glance; Bowser attacks the Star Festival and kidnaps Princess Peach, and Mario has to save her while gaining back the 120 stars he also stole from the Comet Observatory to reach the centre of the universe.

This game does however showcase Bowser's evilest plans yet (creating his own galaxy to be God, and experiments with Dark Matter), and references the RPGs with Bowser taking the castle into outer space.

Characters

Oddly enough, most regulars of the series DO NOT appear in this game. Petey Piranha and King Boo are nowhere to be seen, along with Wario, Waluigi, Daisy and Toadsworth. Instead, there are mainly the very basic characters, Bowser Jr and a host of new faces from all over the universe.

Mario

Luigi

Peach

Bowser

Rosalina

Bowser Jr

Most of the galaxies are just what they say on the name, and such like. Good Egg and Space Junk Galaxies have a space theme, Honeyhive and Gold Leaf are pretty much mirror versions and the Battlerock and Dreadnought Galaxies are space stations seemingly controlled by the Topman tribe. The reactors and such like are Bowser's military type headquarters, the Loopdee galaxies involve Manta Ray riding, Bubble galaxies involve bubbles and Rolling galaxies include using giant balls with stars in. To sum up:

Space Themed Areas:

Good Egg Galaxy Space Junk Galaxy

Grassy Plains and Hills areas:

Honeyhive Galaxy Gusty Garden Galaxy Gold Leaf Galaxy

Space Stations:

Battlerock Galaxy Dreadnought Galaxy

Water Themed Areas:

Beach Bowl Galaxy Sea Slide Galaxy Deep Dark Galaxy Drip Drop Galaxy Bonefin Galaxy

Haunted House type areas:

Ghostly Galaxy Deep Dark Galaxy Boo's Boneyard Galaxy

Reactors:

Bowser Jr's Robot Reactor Bowser's Star Reactor Bowser Jr's Airship Armada Bowser's Dark Matter Plant Bowser Jr's Lava Reactor Bowser's Galaxy Reactor

Freezeflame galaxy is an area with both fire and ice, kinda like Hailfire Peaks in Banjo Tooie.

Power Ups

There are a plethora of returning and new power ups in Super Mario Galaxy, and most of them, while a bit underused, are indeed excellent fun to use, and useful in many, many different ways. They are:

Bee Shroom

Turns Mario or Luigi into Bee Mario/Luigi and allows them to fly around for a short while. They also for some reason become lighter, which allows them to walk on flowers, and can climb around on honeycombs.

Boo Shroom

Turns Mario or Luigi into Boo Mario/Luigi. They can then float around by pressing A for infinite amounts of time, and turn invisible to go through mesh fences and walls, kind of like the vanish cap in Super Mario 64. They do however change back in light, and this does cause Boos to follow them.

Fire Flower

Back from the old games, this allows Mario to become Fire Mario (and Luigi to become Fire Luigi). Here, he can throw infinite fireballs that burn up enemies, light torces and melt ice/snow. However, there is a (rather short) time limit to this power.

Ice Flower

A new power up, this allows Mario to become Ice Mario. He can turn water to ice by running across it (same with lava for some reason) which allows him to use water to journey around the levels. Also a timed power up.

Rainbow Star

Basically invincibility in the 2D sense as from a star, this makes Mario and Luigi invincible, being able to instantly destroy enemies by touching them and run right through dangerous obstacles. They also glow multiple flashing colours, run faster and do fancy flips when jumping. Again, timed.

Spring Mario

Mario becomes a spring and can bounce high into the air. Kinda like a new frog suit for land, and even more awkward. Not timed, but hard to use.

Flying Mario/Red Star

Turns Mario or Luigi into versions of themselves with black and red/green outfits who can fly around for the duration of the power up. They can spin to collect starbits, and even do complete 360 degree turns and vertical climbs in mid air. Runs out after a time limit.

Bosses

In Super Mario Galaxy, there are a lot of Bowser's, and about triple what were in Super Mario 64 and Sunshine. You also fight them multiple times, and most major (six star) galaxies have a boss battle. The bosses are:

  • Dino Piranha
  • King Kaliente
  • Bugaboom
  • Megaleg
  • Kamella
  • Tarantox
  • Topmaniac
  • Bouldergeist
  • Bowser Jr
  • Major Burrows
  • Baron Brrr
  • Undergrunt Gunner (electric and normal)
  • Kingfin
  • Fiery Dino Piranha
  • Bowser

None of these bosses have ever appeared in a Mario game before, and hence are completely new characters specifically made for this game.

Kingfin Fanlisting

And many of the above bosses gained a lot of fans, hence the Kingfin fanlisting was added to the main DS Ultimate site sometime this year. It's basically a list of fans for Kingfin (a skeletal shark boss from Super Mario Galaxy) and some information about both Kingfin and the Bonefin Galaxy.

Technical Spectacle (Graphics and Music)

Graphics wise, Super Mario Galaxy is one of the best games on the Wii, and certainly one where there is the most in terms of objects in each world. Whole planets of stuff are often loaded at once, the levels are far bigger than the first two 3D games and the characters and areas all look shiny and detailed.

Musically, it's again a masterpiece. Having completely orchestrated music, each world has atmospheric background tunes to suit the action onscreen, and the music actually transitions as the events on screen change.

Effect on the Mario Series

In terms of effects, there haven't been too many since, but quite a few things have influenced newer games. For one, part of the Good Egg Galaxy music was used in Rainbow Road for Mario Kart Wii, and the whole course had various other influences from the game (starbits and star launcher). Rosalina has also reappeared as a playable character in Mario Kart Wii, and the Maple Treeway course takes clear influences from Super Mario Galaxy such as leaf piles and design. Finally, the tournaments use bosses from the game, such as a Red Topman being the first, and take place on Galaxy Colosseum, also partly based on the game.
